I soggetti preposti all’ordine pubblico, infatti, temerebbero una massiccia presenza di “football casuals” all’ evento.

Fan drops allegation of assault against Assou-Ekotto

Assou-Ekotto has been at Spurs since 2006

Tottenham full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto will face no further investigation after a fan withdrew an allegation that the player had assaulted him.

Assou-Ekotto, 25, was involved in a confrontation with a supporter as he left the pitch at the end of Spurs’ 1-0 defeat by Wolves on Saturday.Police will now end their enquiries as the player and the fan will meet this week to settle the matter amicably. The FA has also said it will take no further action over the incident.Tottenham assistant manager Joe Jordan led Assou-Ekotto away after the incident and later gave his version of events to the club’s security team. One eye witness said the Cameroon international raised his hands to the supporter’s neck after receiving verbal abuse.

The incident was not filmed as part of television coverage of the match but was likely to have been captured on CCTV as it happened so close to the tunnel.A Tottenham spokesman said: “The club takes the conduct of our supporters and players, and the relationship between them, very seriously.”The fan and Benoit are due to speak this week to bring an amicable end to the matter.”Assou-Ekotto joined Spurs in 2006 from French club Lens and has been ever-present in the Premier League team this season. He scored with a memorable 30-yard drive in the 2-1 opening day win over Liverpool.

Scotland draw big names – Smith

Smith impressed by calibre of applicants

Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith is impressed by the standard of applicants for the vacant national manager’s job.

The SFA are in the process of drawing up a shortlist of candidates.”There are a few big names in the game,” said Smith when quizzed about the quality of those interested.”There is no question that there are people who are known to the public and have had great careers – some as players – and in management.”Smith stressed that the SFA are considering managers who have not applied to succeed George Burley, who was sacked in November. He also added that candidates’ chances will not be affected if the media unearth plans to hold talks about the post.Foreign coaches Dan Petrescu and Nevio Scala have both declared an interest in the job and a meeting with the former was cancelled once the SFA discovered details of the arrangement had been leaked.”Nobody is ruled out by going public at all,” insisted Smith.”What I would say is that no one has been asked along for an interview, no one has been approached in terms of us wanting to speak to anyone yet.”We’re just doing our homework, our due diligence.”We’re still developing a list of names but we are on schedule in terms of what we are trying to do.”Smith wants a new man in place before the draw for Euro 2012 qualifying is made in February.

Despite repeatedly stating he has no interest in a return to the post, Rangers boss Walter Smith is likely to be approached, along with Dundee United’s Craig Levein, who has been reluctant to address the speculation.”We’ll be looking to identify other people ourselves,” added Smith. “Along the way, we would have to find out whether they have an interest in it.”We’re looking for someone with experience but I won’t react to any names. I think it’s totally unfair if I speak about anyone in a positive or negative manner.”It will be someone with a good reputation, someone who we feel can take the team forward and take Scottish football forward.”

Right-wing group plans demo during Middle East film festival

The Scottish Defence League, an offshoot of the English Defence League, wants to stage a rally on 20 February in the city centre. The SDL has circulated an e-mail targeting Saturday, 20 February, for the protest. A Middle East film festival is being staged that day at the city’s Filmhouse cinema in Lothian Road. The event is part of a month-long Middle East Peace Festival. The date also coincides with the Hearts v Hamilton football clash, fuelling fears that the group is trying to attract football casuals to its protest.”
