Man U stewards accused of GBH

Attack … Stringer and Roberts are accused of breaking a fan’s legs

TWO Manchester United football stewards appeared in court today accused of breaking the legs of a Manchester City fan caught smoking.

Mark Roberts, 46, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, and Paul Stringer, 45, of Runcorn, Cheshire, are both charged with causing grievous bodily harm. The fan lit-up a cigarette at Old Trafford during a derby match between the two Manchester teams on September 20.He was allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs, breaking both his legs, while he was being chucked out.Roberts and Stringer appeared at Trafford Magistrates’ Court for the hearing. The case was adjourned for a committal hearing at the same court on January 11.

A FRAIL Manchester City fan claims he broke both legs when he was shoved down steps by a Manchester United steward.

Peter Sweeney – just seven stone because of an eating disorder – said the Old Trafford worker then dragged him into the street as he screamed in agony. He was taken to hospital only when a policeman saw him crumpled and bleeding from cuts to his head, face and arms.

MANCHESTER UNITED V MANCHESTER CITY,

Dad-of-three Peter, 46, said: “This guy was nothing but a bully. He’s there to protect the fans – not attack them. I’m lucky he didn’t kill me.”Police yesterday collected CCTV footage from the 76,000-seater stadium. The alleged attack came minutes into the derby clash on September 20, which United won 4-3. Peter – who had to quit work as a printer because rare oesophageal achalasia left him weak and living on a liquid diet – was told to leave after being caught smoking in a toilet. The City season-ticket holder sneaked back towards the stands only to be confronted by the same burly 6ft steward.Peter, of Macclesfield, Cheshire, said: “I agreed to leave without a fuss. But as we headed along the concourse he shoved me in the back three or four times with real aggression.”When I protested he told me he was entitled to ‘use reasonable force’. With that he led to the top of the stairs and pushed me straight down.”He added: “I wasn’t drunk. I’d had a pint and a half of Guinness but I can’t drink more because of my condition.”Police said United were helping their investigation. The club said it could not commen.

Fir Park and Hampden host semis

Co-operative Insurance Cup

Motherwell’s Fir Park has been chosen as the venue for the Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final between Hearts and St Mirren on Tuesday 2 February.

Hampden Park will host the other semi-final between Rangers and St Johnstone the following evening. That game will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland with a 1935GMT kick-off.St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson had urged the Scottish Football League not to choose Easter Road for their semi as it would favour fans from Edinburgh.MacPherson had suggested that most players would prefer that the match would be held at the national stadium. However, the SFL has chosen Motherwell’s ground instead of Hampden for the match against Hearts.
