Why we cannot expose Blackburn and Burnley to Old Firm madness
Lancashire Telegraph
11 November 2009
By Chris Flanagan

IN Bucharest, the dust has not yet settled, the investigation only just commencing. They had witnessed carnage, and now it seems some are willing to expose Blackburn and Burnley to the same mayhem. We do not yet know the latest thoughts of John Williams and Barry Kilby, the respective chairmen of Blackburn Rovers and Burnley, on the issue of Rangers and Celtic joining English football. But tomorrow, at a Premier League meeting, it is likely both will have their say.All 20 chairmen are expected to discuss the matter, and there appears an underlying consensus that welcoming in the Old Firm could prove beneficial. But each chairman would be best served watching the footage of last week’s Champions League game between Rangers and Unirea Urziceni before making their choice. If they do not have the time, as someone who was in Romania last Wednesday on a short break, let me summarise.Firstly, they should note how poor Rangers – and indeed Celtic – are. They are certainly no better than Rovers or Burnley, indeed their level may be more like Middlesbrough or West Brom. When Owen Coyle turned down Celtic to stay at Turf Moor in the summer, he undoubtedly made the right choice. Then, there was last week’s violence.Violence that lasted the entire half-time interval of Rangers’ game and left stewards having to take cover as seat after seat was ripped from the stand and hurled in their direction.Do we really want to see this at Ewood Park or Turf Moor any time soon? This was not a tiny minority, but at least 50 or 100 fans who seized on the chance to cause trouble once a steward had made the mistake of using CS gas to quell a minor disturbance. We note this is not the first time Rangers fans have faced a UEFA investigation in recent times, nor is their destruction restricted to stadiums.Recall the damage done to Manchester city centre on UEFA Cup final night.By inviting Rangers and Celtic into the Premier League, every weekend – for at least a year or two until things settle down – will be like a European away day. Most act impeccably, but others decide normal standards of behaviour – or sobriety – do not apply. Some Premier League chairmen may be willing to take their chances, but the towns of Blackburn and Burnley should not have to suffer the consequences.

Gremlins yob Mark Mennim arrested over ban
Evening Chronicle

by Adam Jupp

SERIAL soccer yob Mark Mennim has been charged with breaching his stadium ban.

Just days after being hit with a three-year football banning order, the 48-year-old was arrested after allegedly failing to properly register his details with the authorities.Mennim, who dubbed himself “the General” of Newcastle’s notorious hooligan firm the Gremlins will now appear before magistrates on the charge and could face further penalties. The thug, of Chatsworth Gardens, Walker, has a long history of football-related violence, having followed the Toon at home and abroad intent on causing trouble.Mennim has had two banning orders, the first of which came in 2004, when he was stopped from travelling to Portugal to see England in the European Championships. That expired in August 2006, and since then he has regularly been spotted with Newcastle’s most notorious yobs at the scene of rucks involving the Gremlins. At his latest court hearing, details of an incident that saw him emerge from Rosie’s Bar, in Newcastle city centre, covered in blood before a match with Stoke City were given. And the court heard Mennim was also at the centre of disorder that flared when United played Stoke again last December. He was spotted in bars in Newcastle and Gateshead with a number of known “risk supporters” but trouble broke out in Wrekenton, Gateshead.Pictures showed him at the front of a mob, many with hoods and scarves covering their faces, walking towards the Seven Stars pub, where two minibuses of Stoke supporters were waiting. One officer later described the scene as ‘carnage’ and another said it was the worst violence they had seen in 17 years of service.Mennim did not contest the latest application for a three-year football banning order. It prevents him going to Toon games, home and away, and from being in town centres where England or Newcastle United matches are being played for 24 hours before and 12 hours after kick-off.He will appear before magistrates later this month charged with breaching the order. All people who get a ban have to register with police with passport photographs within a set period of time after getting their orders.
