Man Utd 3 3 CSKA Moscow

Paul Scholes
Paul Scholes’ header pulled United back into the game

Manchester United staged a stirring late rally at Old Trafford to claim a place in the last 16 of the Champions League after CSKA Moscow looked poised to end their 22-game unbeaten home record in the competition.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s revamped United looked like they would have to wait to seal their place in the knockout phase when they trailed 3-1 with only six minutes remaining. But with a grandstand finish that has become their trademark, Paul Scholes headed home six minutes from time and Antonio Valencia’s deflected shot in injury time rescued the vital point.CSKA looked well on course to inflict United’s first Champions League defeat at Old Trafford since AC Milan won in February 2005 – but they reckoned without the powers of recovery and refusal to accept defeat buried deep within Ferguson’s side. The Russians took the lead after 25 minutes when Alan Dzagoev beat a static Edwin van der Sar from an angle, but Michael Owen pounced in the area to restore equality four minutes later.

CSKA were quickly back in front when Milos Krasic rounded Van der Sar to score, and when Vasili Berezutski headed home Dzagoev’s free-kick two minutes after half-time, United looked likely to sample the rare taste of defeat on home territory. But the introduction of Wayne Rooney, the day after the birth of his son Kai, lifted the mood inside Old Trafford and set the scene for United’s late charge.United boss Ferguson made public his admiration for Igor Akinfeev in his programme notes, and the CSKA keeper will have further impressed the Old Trafford hierarchy with a magnificent display that kept the Premier League champions at bay until the late double salvo from Scholes and Valencia broke their resistance.

To complete a miserable conclusion for CSKA, they had defender Deividas Semberas sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

United fielded a much-changed side, but Rooney was a surprise inclusion on the bench the day after the birth of his son.Injury to Dimitar Berbatov gave Owen a chance to impress, and he was heavily involved in a first half that provided mixed fare for a subdued Old Trafford gallery.Owen had his first chance after seven minutes when he was played in by Valencia, but he failed to make a firm connection and his effort rolled harmlessly wide.Darren Fletcher was then inches away with Akinfeev beaten, before Owen saw a point-blank shot blocked by the CSKA keeper after the United striker had bundled his way through a packed penalty area.Federico Macheda, also getting a rare opportunity as Ferguson gave his shadow squad some game time, almost made his mark with a long-range effort before CSKA shocked United by taking the lead after 25 minutes.United defender Jonny Evans looked to have seen off the threat of Dzagoev when he drove him wide, but he then unleashed an angled drive which flew high past a startled and motionless Van der Sar.Owen made amends for his earlier misses when he drew United level four minutes later, beating Akinfeev on the turn inside the area after Valencia’s cross rebounded into his path off Nani.As Old Trafford celebrated and assumed normal service had been resumed, CSKA were back in front within two minutes as Krasic stayed onside to latch on to Tomas Necid’s pass and rounded Van der Sar to score on the turn.Akinfeev then demonstrated his class with two more fine saves from Macheda and Scholes as United attempted to atone for their defensive lapses.Sadly for Fergusonm that vulnerability was in evidence again as CSKA added a third two minutes after the break. Macheda lost his bearings, and Vasili Berezutski, to allow him to arrive unmarked at the far post to head beyond Van der Sar.This was the signal for Rooney to warm up, much to Old Trafford’s delight, but before he entered the action United were denied a clear penalty when Fletcher was felled by Aleksei Berezutski, but Portuguese official Olegario Benquerenca inexplicably ignored the claim and opted instead to show the Scot a yellow card for diving.Rooney’s energy had an instant impact on the tempo of United’s game, and Akinfeev excelled again to block a powerful 25-yard free-kick from Scholes. And as United laid siege to the CSKA goal, Akinfeev showed exactly why he is so highly-regarded throughout Europe by producing a string of top-class saves in the closing stages, making a defiant double stop from Owen and Rooney. He then recovered superbly to defy Rooney once more after Macheda’s header had bounced out off a post – but CSKA were wilting under the pressure and United pounced.Scholes headed home Gary Neville’s free-kick with six minutes left, and Valencia capped a trademark grandstand finish when his shot from the edge of the area was deflected off Georgy Shchennikov past Akinfeev.

Atletico Madrid 2 2 Chelsea

By Mandeep Sanghera

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba
Drogba scored on his return to champions League action

Didier Drogba struck twice to earn Chelsea a draw at Atletico Madrid and confirm their progress from the Champions League group stages.

A thunderous Sergio Aguero volley had put the home side ahead before Drogba rose highest to head in an equaliser from a Florent Malouda cross.Drogba then sidefooted in at the second attempt after his first shot had been saved to put his side ahead. But Aguero curled in a late 25-yard free-kick to earn Atletico a draw.Drogba was back after a three game European ban after his wild antics following the semi-final defeat to Barcelona in last year’s competition. And his goals showed him at his powerful and clinical best but glossed over a Chelsea performance which had rarely shown the kind of edge and authority which has seen them win four on the bounce and score 17 goals in the process.

Atletico have had a change of manager since Chelsea beat them 4-0 two weeks ago and new coach Quique Sanchez Flores wanted the Spanish team to show a more positive intent. He cited Atletico had more to gain than lose having yet to pick up a point ahead of the game and the home side – backed by a fervent Vicente Calderon crowd – showed the type of urgency and desire they have lacked too often during a poor season.Chelsea initially showed soaked up the early pressure before almost catching Atletico out at the other end.Michael Essien’s determination on the edge of the home side’s area saw the ball break for Drogba and he instantly swivelled and struck an angled shot which went just wide. But former Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes had been given a rare start by Atletico and had one shimmy and left-foot curler tipped over by keeper Petr Cech.

Chelsea were relying on catching out their opponents on the counter-attack and almost did so when Salomon Kalou steered a header from an Ashley Cole cross just over the apex of the Atletico goal.Lampard powered a shot wide, while a Drogba free-kick was also palmed on to the post and clear of danger by keeper Sergio Asenjo. However, Chelsea – in contrast to Atletico – were waiting for things to happen rather than taking the initiative. They were eventually punished for their lethargy as they conceded their first goal in the Champions League this season, while Atletico scored their first.John Terry inadvertently flicked on a cross and Atletico substitute Aguero sent a volley flying past a helpless Cech.Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti had rested regular first-teamers Nicolas Anelka and Deco as well as Michael Ballack with a game against Manchester United on Sunday. But he was forced to bring the trio on as he tried to get his team back into the game.Deco sent a volley narrowly wide before the substitutions worked as Drogba nodded in from six yards. The Ivory Coast international striker then left two defenders in his wake to break clean through on goal and, despite his first shot being saved, he made no mistake from the follow-up to take his tally to 12 for the season.Atletico had not lost at home so far this season and maintained that record when Aguero curled in a superb free-kick to rescue a deserved draw.Nevertheless, with 10 points from their first four Group D games, Chelsea’s progress into the first knockout round of the Champions League was assured.

A FOOTBALL match between two teams of police officers was abandoned after they began FIGHTING each other.

The stunned referee blew the whistle on the plods five minutes before half-time after tempers flared on the pitch.Officers from Paisley are thought to have been playing colleagues from a Glasgow division when the trouble erupted on the astroturf pitches near Rangers’ Ibrox stadium. Now police footy officials are set to investigate the bust-up between the Strathclyde cops.A source said last night: “It’s the last thing you’d expect from cops.”I’m sure there will be a few red faces.”The insider added: “One in particular was charging around the field and battering into shocking challenges.”It’s thought some of the players began to noise-up their rivals not long after kick-off during the match last Thursday.Sources told how tackles started to fly in as the temperature on the park began to rise. The sickened ref then abandoned the tie just moments before half-time.Our source added: “It was crazy. Things were getting a bit tasty and starting to get out of control.”One of them was behaving worse than the rest, he was going around like mad having a go at folk. The referee obviously decided enough was enough and ended the game.”He probably thought he would be in for an easy day’s work with coppers on the pitch, but it didn’t work out that way.”It says it all that he didn’t even get through to half-time.”Strathclyde Police last night said the shame-game would be investigated by a police football body.A spokesman said: “We have been made aware that a game was abandoned by the referee 40 minutes into play.”Once a report on the circumstances has been received, the Scottish Police Football Association Disciplinary Committee will consider its findings and take appropriate action if deemed necessary.“Last October The Scottish Sun told how a match made up of politicians and sports writers had to be abandoned – because the Parly team was too violent. The ref was forced to halt the goodwill game after a horror challenge on pundit Chick Young from Labour’s John Park led to a PUNCH-UP.The referee blasted both squads saying he had seen better behaviour from a team of schoolkids.Telly star Chick – who was carried off with an injured ankle – said at the time: “They were a team of thugs.”But the politicians later sent roses to the BBC Scotland broadcaster to apologise.

American professors slammed over Liverpool FC disaster claims

American university academics have been condemned over an “expert” report on stadium disasters that falsely brands as hooligans, two sets of fans from British soccer clubs. The United States Sports Academy sparked outrage when its “Sports Journal” web site accused Liverpool supporters of revelling in the deaths of 39 supporters at the 1985 European Cup final against Juventus in Belgium. It claimed Reds fans were “jumping round in celebration” as bodies were being taken to a makeshift mortuary outside the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. The report by A.J. Haley, Phd and Brian S. Johnson also says fans urinated on the corpses of the dead at Heysel. But this was an outright lie, later officially retracted by The Sun newspaper, after it was published in reports of the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster in which 96 Liverpool supporters died.Professor Rogan Taylor, a director of Liverpool University’s Football Industry Group, and founder of the Football Supporters Association in the aftermath of Heysel, condemned the report as “idiotic”.He said: “This is the the kind of nonsense that myself and other Liverpool supporters have had to endure for more than 20 years.”Unfortunately, it’s par for the course from idiots who know nothing about nothing, but it is disturbing that it should be published in an academic journal.”It is patently inaccurate and what is even more outlandish is that the authors of this report have even fallen into the trap of transposing a deplorable lie from one disaster to another.”The report is clearly unreliable and should be retracted in its entirety.”The report also blames the fire at Bradford’s Valley Parade ground , which killed 56 people in 1985, on hooliganism – suggesting that it was caused by a home-made petrol bomb.Bradford City Chairman Mark Lawn condemned the claims which happened when a wooden stand caught fire from a discarded cigarette that set light to accumulated litter.Mr Lawn said: “They should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. People died entirely innocently as a result of a fire caused by a discarded cigarette. It was an accident.”If they are going to turn around and tar Bradford City with the name of hooligans, do they not realise its is going to upset the families of those who died?”That is certainly a false statement – and as someone who was there and watched it happen, I am more than annoyed.”If they want to mention the fire and quote what actually happened then by all means do so, but to connect it with hooligans is wrong and to do that is derogatory to the people who lost their lives.”Dr Arthur Ogden, who oversees articles published in the US Sports Journal and its web site, has invited Liverpool and Bradford supporters to set the record straight by writing an article in response.Dr Ogden said: “We do invite those people who have concerns with this particular piece to write a response article.”We will be glad to review it and publish it as a refutation.”To do anything rather than ask people to write a refutation would be a censorship. It is something that needs investigation.”
