Si sono disputati incontri valevoli per le coppe di lega di Inghilterra ( “Carling Cup” in foto ) e Scozia. In Inghilterra successi nei tempi regolamentari per Man U,Blackburn,Portsmouth e Tottenham rispettivamente contro Barnsley,Peterborough,Stoke City ed Everton mentre l’ Aston Villa ha dovuto attendere i tiri dagli undici metri per piegare il Sunderland.. In Scozia, invece, hanno passato il turno Rangers, St. Johnstone e St.Mirren a spese di Dundee Fc,Dundee Utd e Motherwell. Nella “League One” inglese rotondo poker del Leeds sul terreno del Bristol Rovers. I “bianchi”, lungamente imbattuti fino alla sconfitta contro il Millwall, hanno ripreso, così, la loro marcia.

Piquionne gave manager Paul Hart a timely reminder of his talents

Frederic Piquionne was the star as Portsmouth put their poor league form to one side to easily qualify for the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.
The much-changed hosts were always in control after Piquionne headed past Steve Simonsen after 17 minutes.The on-loan Lyon striker then turned provider for Danny Webber who cut in and drove home before stabbing in a third after a mistake by Simonsen.Kanu added a fourth from close range late on to cap a dominant display.

Rangers were made to work hard for the win at Dens Park

Rangers progressed to the semi-finals of the Co-operative Insurance Cup with a hard-fought victory at Dens Park.
Steven Whittaker headed the cup holders in front but Leigh Griffiths hit back with a tremendous free-kick.The First Division leaders enjoyed a good spell of pressure after the break but Gary McKenzie headed into his own net to put the visitors back in front. John Fleck completed the scoring late on, shooting home after a bustling run from Nacho Novo.
