Aston Villa 2 1 Chelsea

James Collins, Richard Dunne and Gabriel Agbonlahor celebrate Villa's winner
James Collins, Richard Dunne and Gabriel Agbonlahor celebrate Villa’s winner

By Oliver Brett

Aston Villa delivered a blow to Chelsea’s title ambitions as the Premier League leaders suffered their second successive away defeat.

Taking the lead when Brad Friedel failed to deal with a speculative long-range effort from Didier Drogba, Chelsea failed to capitalise. An unmarked Richard Dunne headed Villa level after Ashley Young’s corner flicked off Frank Lampard.James Collins headed the winner from another Young corner to stun Chelsea.Chelsea’s second defeat of the campaign will give plenty of heart to the teams chasing them at the top of the Premier League ladder, while Villa leap-frogged Arsenal and Liverpool with this result, to take temporary ownership of fifth place.Emile Heskey was again confined to the subs’ bench by Martin O’Neill, who kept faith with the side which drew against Manchester City, while Chelsea made three changes to the line-up which defeated Liverpool 2-0 a fortnight ago.Goalkeeper Petr Cech returned from suspension, Florent Malouda came in for the injured Michael Ballack and Jose Bosingwa recovered from a hamstring setback to take over from Branislav Ivanovic.

After a quiet opening 10 minutes, the game exploded into life when emergency referee Kevin Friend, hauled into the hot seat at the last minute when Steve Bennett was indisposed, waved away Villa appeals for a penalty. On closer inspection, Bosingwa had wrapped his arm all over Gabriel Agbonlahor’s shoulder, preventing him from capitalising on Stilyan Petrov’s cross with only Petr Cech to beat – so Chelsea could easily have been 1-0 down, with just 10 men on the pitch for the rest of the match.Instead, Chelsea poured forward, James Milner denying Florent Malouda with a smart tackle. But on their next attack the west London club took the lead.Drogba skilfully turned Collins, but was still around 30 yards out when firing his shot at the Villa goal.Friedel should have had the effort comfortably covered, but the 38-year-old American was deceived by the dip and bounce of the shot, and had to hide his embarrassment as he picked the ball out of the back of his net.Chelsea, no doubt fortified by the goal, tended to offer more in the way of a threat going forward – so it was a bit of a surprise to see Villa grab an equaliser. It had an element of fortune about it, as Frank Lampard’s attempted clearing header from Young’s corner served up a chance on a silver platter for Dunne. The Republic of Ireland defender buried his header from close range. But Chelsea now produced their best football of the half. Friedel, atoning for his earlier error, had to back-pedal furiously to tip a cheeky chip from the consistently excellent Deco over the top right-hand corner. And a neat move of short passes played across the edge of the Villa area presented Drogba with an excellent chance, whereupon Collins produced a terrific block, throwing his body into the path of the shot. The Blues’ defence was found wanting early in the second half, however, when another corner from Young proved too much to deal with. This time the winger picked out Collins on the far post, who was given vast swathes of undefended territory in which to rise up to nod the ball down, back across goal and into the net.John Terry reacted by jumping around the box like a toddler with a tantrum, but the only way Chelsea could respond was to attack once again. The danger signs were posted when Deco, and then Malouda, failed to test Friedel adequately when each was given an excellent chance to equalise.Though they were now dealing with scraps of possession, with 18 minutes to go, Villa had a chance to go 3-1 up. Young swept a beautiful pass from deep on the left flank to Milner on the right. But his lay-off to John Carew was hit over Cech’s bar.Friedel made his third vitally important save of the half when denying Nicolas Anelka, but Deco and Lampard were giving Villa plenty more nervous moments, before Heskey came on to replace Carew for the final few minutes.Chelsea, who had already replaced Bosingwa with Ivanovic, now sent on Joe Cole for Malouda but seemed to lose their shape as their hunt for an equaliser grew more desperate. The excitement of the home fans steadily grew and in the three minutes of time added on, there was nothing to scare them.

Man Utd 2 1 Bolton

Manchester United celebrate their opening goal
United travel to CSKA Moscow on Wednesday and Liverpool on Sunday

By David Ornstein

Manchester United moved top of the Premier League with a nervy victory over Bolton at Old Trafford.

The champions took an early lead when Michael Owen’s header was deflected into his own net by Zat Knight. After Antonio Valencia lashed home his first goal for United, the hosts looked to be cruise towards the three points. But Matt Taylor headed in from Kevin Davies’ cross and Bolton began to flood forward in search of an equaliser, only to be denied by some dogged defending.Sir Alex Ferguson’s men will be mightily relieved to have secured the win, which was far from convincing but sees them go a point clear of Chelsea after the Blues were beaten at Aston Villa earlier on Saturday.Such was their dominance, United seemed to switch off mid-way through the second half and were fortunate not to be punished as Bolton laid siege to their goal.

Reina is beaten after Bent’s shot deflected in off a balloon

By Mandeep Sanghera

Liverpool’s stuttering season took a turn for the worse as they were beaten by a Sunderland side who leapfrog them in the Premier League with the win.

The Black Cats took the lead when a Darren Bent shot was allowed to stand after deflecting in off a balloon. But the home side were inspired and Bent glanced a header just wide before hitting the post with an angled shot.Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon pulled off a double save from Dirk Kuyt and David Ngog late on to secure the win.A fourth defeat of the league season, it will only add to the question marks over Liverpool’s title credentials as they were outplayed without injured midfielder Steven Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres.Ahead of a week in which they face a crucial Champions League tie against Lyon and host Manchester United, they only added weight to critics who label them a two-man team.

St Johnstone 1 2 Rangers

Kris Boyd equalises
Rangers striker Kris Boyd levels the score just before half-time

By Keir Murray

Rangers recovered from an early Collin Samuel goal for Saint Johnstone to take all three points and move to the top of the Scottish Premier League.

Saints started the brighter and took the lead when Murray Davidson sent Samuel clear and the Trinidad star slotted beyond Allan McGregor.Despite Saints controlling the first half, Kris Boyd levelled in 40 minutes, firing past the exposed Alan Main. The home side had chances to win it but Sasa Papac curled home a late clincher. With centre-half Madjid Bougherra dropped by Walter Smith for returning late from Algerian international duty, the Rangers rearguard was immediately put under pressure by St Johnstone.Lee McCulloch was skinned by Samuel in the right-back position and his cross produced a powerful downward header by Martin Hardie which bounced off the turf before crashing off McGregor’s right-hand post. With former Saint Ally McCoist bellowing at his Rangers charges to get a grip on the game, the visitors drew level in 40 minutes.A shot by Kevin Thomson from outside the box deflected off Lafferty then a St Johnstone defender, allowing Boyd to pounce and slot past Main.Davidson was presented with the first chance of the second period when Hardie’s swooping cross invited a header from six yards, but the midfielder nodded it wide.McCulloch was yellow carded by Willie Collum for a late challenge on Samuel, then Grainger really ought to have unleashed a shot when he thrust into the box but inexplicably opted to pass.

Samuel is congratulated on his stunning opening goal

As Saints looked the more likely to score, Samuel tormented Papac on the right wing, wrong-footing the Bosnian and sending a low cross into the box where Davidson and Chris Millar lurked.Davidson, though, rather than set up the advancing Millar, misjudged the weight of pass to set up his team-mate and the danger was cleared.Rothen had a shot charged down which wormed its way through for Main to save, then Lafferty left two Saints trailing in his wake as he burst into the box but his final ball was wayward. As both sides increased their attacking options, Walter Smith sent on Steven Naismith for Steven Smith and Rothen was replaced by Nacho Novo, while McInnes put his faith in Filipe Morais for Swankie.Rangers’ second goal was a wonderful strike by Papac in 83 minutes.Whittaker’s deep cross from the right was inch-perfect for Naismith, who nodded the ball into the path of the Bosnian defender, who moved the ball from right foot to left and curled a shot beyond the despairing Main.It was rough justice for the inventive Perth side, who had further chances through shots from Liam Craig and Morais, both saved by McGregor. But Rangers held on and will feel relieved to head back to Glasgow with all three points.

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes: “I felt we had the better chances in the game, we went toe-to-toe with a very good side. “They are champions, they are used to winning and that is why they keep going. “We were a bit sloppy at both goals. We played a part in our own downfall. We are learning as we go along, we are progressing. “These games won’t dictate where we finish this season. On today’s performance, we should have got something.”The goals changed the reflection of the game. We’re creating chances, we look a real threat. You don’t always get what you deserve.”

Celtic 0 0 Motherwell

By Colin Moffat

Celtic striker Scott McDonald is watched by Stevie Hammell

Celtic surrendered top spot in the Scottish Premier League as they failed to convert a host of chances against a lively Motherwell side.

Scott McDonald and Aiden McGeady both missed with close range headers in the dying stages.McDonald had earlier seen a shot drift narrowly wide and visiting keeper John Ruddy enjoyed a good day.The visitors were always a threat and Lukas Jutkiewicz was twice denied by saves from Artur Boruc. The result leaves Celtic a point behind Rangers, while Motherwell move on to 13 points in fifth place. well to deliver a cross from the right and Georgio Samaras hit a sliding half-volley wide of the mark.
