England fans warned: Beware of racist thugs in Ukraine
Daily Mail
08 October 2009
By Ashley Gray

England fans have been officially warned to be wary of race attacks ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in Dnipropetrovsk. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have advised black and Asian supporters particularly to be on their guard, while the official line is that ‘all fans should exercise caution’.’Most visitors don’t encounter any problems when visiting Ukraine, however there has been an increase in muggings and other violent attacks on foreign nationals in major cities and towns,’ said the statement.’Some of these have been racially motivated so travellers of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent and people belonging to religious minorities should take extra care. But all fans should exercise caution.’The FA have also issued safety advice to the 2,000 supporters who are believed to have made the trip.An England fan site yesterday reported that some had already come under random attacks in the capital Kiev, where 300 Scots were targeted by skinheads before a match in October 2006.Supporters of Dnipro, the club whose stadium will be used tomorrow, proudly post videos of domestic hooliganism on the internet and spout hatred on the message boards of unofficial websites.A statement on the Dnipro Ultras website reads: ‘We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.’Another post shows a photo of fans kicking and punching Shakhtar Donetsk followers who are cowering in fear and wincing in pain.A pamphlet reportedly given out by Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs earlier this year identified Dnipro as one of three clubs in the country that may be a hotbed for racism and right-wing views.UEFA are aware of a problem with racism in the city, and country as a whole.

Soccer yob jailed
Sheffield Telegraph
09 October 2009
By Claire Lewis

A FOOTBALL hooligan involved in a mob attack on two South Yorkshire Police officers has been jailed for a year.

Philip Adams, aged 32, was among a group of up to 25 Lincoln City fans who attacked two South Yorkshire officers after Sheffield United played their team in a pre-season friendly. The thugs trapped the officers on a bridge outside Lincoln’s Sincil Bank stadium, hurling missiles at them and even throwing a moped and wheelie bin at them. The officers escaped only by using their batons and CS spray. One of the victims was a police “spotter” who has kept an eye on Sheffield United hooligans for seven years. He described the violence as “one of the worst outbreaks of football-related disorder I’ve ever had to police”.Trouble broke out after the two officers asked a group of Lincoln fans to “move on” from a spot outside the ground shortly before the end of the game.Simon Rowe, prosecuting, said the officers were reacting to concerns from some of the travelling Sheffield United fans that Lincoln City hooligans were planning to “ambush” them as they returned to their cars. The group of Lincoln fans refused to move and were joined by a smaller group.Mr Rowe said Adams, of Sincil Bank, Lincoln, was heard to say: “There’s only two of them, we can easily rush them.”One of the officers described the group as “frenzied”.Mr Rowe told the court Adams was heard shouting “LTE, LTE” – a reference to a notorious group of Lincoln City hooligans who go by the name of ‘Lincoln Transit Elite’.Mark Watson, representing Adams, said he was a father-of-three with no record of being involved in football violence. He said: “He admits throwing a missile but this was not organised. It was a reaction to the police after they were prevented from going to the stadium. He had been drinking in a local pub and was going to the ground for the second half after not being sure what time the game kicked off.”Adams was jailed after admitting affray, and banned from attending football matches for six years.

Hornets fan to appeal Worthington Cup violence ban
Watford Observer
8 October 2009

A Watford FC fan who received a football banning order after a match with local rivals Luton Town seven years ago descended into violence is appealing to have it lifted.Alex Wadey, 28, was banned from watching Watford, home or away, and had other restrictions placed on him, after the notorious Worthington Cup clash at Vicarage Road on September 10, 2002, which saw violence between opposing fans inside and outside the ground.Wadey of Gladesmere Court, Watford, will appear at St Albans Crown Court tomorrow to launch an appeal to get the ban overturned. In March 44-year-old Vincent O’Malley had his ban, imposed after the same game, reduced by a year on appeal.O’Malley had been spotted on CCTV kicking out at an opposition fan during the pitch invasion. He had received a 12-month prison sentence as well as a seven-year football banning order. However, a letter from Watford FC read out at the appeal hearing said O’Malley would remain banned from Vicarage Road by the club for life.
