Angry Hughes bemoans timekeeping

Hughes demands explanation for added time

City boss Mark Hughes has demanded an explanation from the referee after United striker Michael Owen settled the Manchester derby in the 96th minute.

Substitute Owen slotted past Shay Given to seal a thrilling 4-3 win for United, despite the fourth official having indicated just four extra minutes.”We need an explanation because I don’t know why the referee has added that amount of time on,” said Hughes.”We just feel a little bit aggrieved that they were given that time.City looked on course for a point after Craig Bellamy’s fine individual goal made it 3-3 in the 90th minute.”His explanation did not sit comfortably with me. He said a minute plus had been added because of our celebration. We scored on 90 minutes, the board was already up for four minutes, so Mr Wiley said he was going to add that minute on.”The amount of time from when we scored to when we kicked-off was something like 45 seconds. He has got that wrong as well. It was 95 minutes 26 seconds.”Obviously he has played too much time and we ended up playing 97 minutes. I just needed an explanation as to why so much time was needed. United were given a little more time than they should have been given to get the goal.”

FA to reveal Upton Park findings
BBC News
20 September 2009

The Football Association will announce in the coming week the findings of its probe into the violence which marred West Ham’s game with Millwall. One man was stabbed as fans clashed outside Upton Park and pitch invasions followed each of West Ham’s goals in their 3-1 Carling Cup win on 25 August.West Ham’s Carlton Cole and Millwall’s Jason Price also alleged that they were racially abused by supporters.Newspaper reports have claimed both clubs will be charged. The FA has said it will impose lifetime stadium bans on fans identified as trouble-makers.”The FA’s extensive investigations into the events at the recent West Ham versus Millwall fixture are drawing to a close,” said an FA statement.”CCTV footage from approximately 47 cameras inside Upton Park is still being examined along with other lines of enquiry.”Both clubs have cooperated and provided assistance in relation to the enquiry and the FA expects to be in a position to confirm the outcome of the investigation in the coming week.”It was the first time east London rivals West Ham and Millwall had played each other since April 2005 and hundreds of fans were involved in violent scenes reminiscent of the 1980s, when English football was dogged by hooliganism.Eyewitness reports suggested opposing fans threw bottles and bricks at each other and started small fires as police moved in to try and quell the disturbances.Inside the stadium, police and stewards battled to remove fans from the pitch throughout the match, which West Ham won in extra time. After the match, riot police lined the streets outside the ground, roads were closed and a helicopter flew overhead in preparation for further possible clashes as thousands of fans tried to leave the stadium at full time.Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola said he was “shocked” by the scenes, adding that he had not seen anything like it in seven years as a player in England.

Patrols increase for city’s derby
BBC News
20 September 2009

Police have increased their patrols to tackle any clashes between rival fans of Manchester City and Manchester United on derby day.

The two teams will meet later at Old Trafford, where alcohol exclusion zones have been created in a bid to stop any violence before and after the match.A police spokesman said anyone arriving at the stadium under the influence of excess alcohol would be refused entry.Officers will also be visiting pubs and bars showing the match live on TV.They are expecting tens of thousands of fans to not only descend on Old Trafford but also to visit the pubs across the city.

‘Fear of abuse’

Warnings have also been issued about domestic violence, with officers saying the number of incidents tends to increase on weekends with high profile football matches.Det Supt Simon Retford said: “This weekend there are a number of significant football matches, Eid and a number of other events taking place.”Previous experience suggests we may see an increase in domestic abuse incidents over the coming weekend.”Domestic abuse is something that all too frequently goes unreported and victims can suffer for years.”Unfortunately, the combination of football and alcohol can lead to victims living in fear of abuse and this is something Greater Manchester Police is determined to tackle.”
