Jermain Defoe
Jermain Defoe celebrates his first goal for England against the Netherlands

Jermain Defoe struck twice as England came from two goals down at the interval against the Netherlands to earn a creditable draw in Amsterdam.

Dirk Kuyt and Rafael Van der Vaart punished errors by Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Barry to give the Dutch control.

But Defoe came off the bench to race clear and pull a goal back after 49 minutes to give England hope.

He steered in a cross from substitute James Milner with 13 minutes left to seal an impressive comeback by England.England coach Fabio Capello will have mixed feelings about the performance of his side – and will demand the basic errors that cost two goals be eradicated as the build up continues towards what he hopes will be a serious World Cup challenge in South Africa next summer. But he will be delighted by the spirit shown as England fought their way back into contention with Defoe as the spearhead, helped by impressive cameos from two other substitutes, Carlton Cole and James MilnerEngland’s hopes of a morale-boosting result were undermined by a dreadful error from Ferdinand that gifted the Dutch an early goal.

Ferdinand’s attempted backpass was desperately casual and fell well short of Robert Green, allowing Kuyt to round the keeper before finding the roof of the net via the outstretched leg of the despairing John Terry.England almost hit back after 17 minutes when Glen Johnson’s clever pass released Frank Lampard inside the area, but his powerful shot was blocked by the legs of Netherlands’ keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.David Beckham was prominent in the early exchanges, and he set up Barry for a long-range shot that flew just over the top.

Green was then forced to save with his legs after Van der Vaart’s free-kick found Kuyt at the far post before another calamitous moment of carelessness allowed the Dutch to double their advantage. This time Barry was the culprit with a pass straight to the feet of Arjen Robben. Green did well to block his shot, but Van der Vaart was on hand to steer home the rebound.Capello made three changes at the interval, sending on Defoe, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Michael Carrick for Emile Heskey, Beckham and Barry.

And they reaped an instant reward inside four minutes of the restart when Defoe raced clear on to Lampard’s pass and beat Stekelenburg off the inside of an upright.Defoe was lively and got on the end of a cross from Milner, introduced for his England debut as a substitute after 67 minutes, only to head just over.

And another substitute Carlton Cole, on for Wayne Rooney, shot inches wide seconds later as England pressed for an equaliser in impressive fashion.England were in the ascendancy, and it was no surprise when they drew level with 13 minutes left when Milner outstripped John Heitinga on the left flank and provided a perfect cross for Defoe to pounce again inside the six-yard box.It set the stage for a powerful finish by Capello’s side, as the Dutch were forced on to the back foot in the closing stages as England pushed for an unlikely victory.”

It remains unclear whether the fighting before the match involved supporters of the international teams or fans of Dutch clubs.Amsterdam’s acting mayor Lodewijk van Asscher told local television there was a threat that supporters of Ajax – the city’s team – wanted to fight English fans.

In addition, a hard core of other clubs in the Netherlands, Belgium and England are planning to come to Amsterdam to misbehave,” he said. The Football Association sold its allocation of 7,000 tickets for the game.A Home Office spokesman said: “The vast majority of England supporters attending this fixture will be genuine bona fide members of the official supporters club and as such will pose no risk to the safety and security of this fixture.”There was no intelligence to suggest any of the 3,129 people subject to banning orders would have tried to travel to the fixture, he added.A spokeswoman for the Royal Netherlands Football Association said 15 people were arrested before the game but that she did not know their nationality. She said reports had suggested the clashes were “not that serious”, adding: “The police were there at the very beginning so they stopped it quickly.”

Norway 4-0 Scotland

Scotland defender Gary Caldwell

Highlights – Norway v Scotland

Scotland’s World Cup dream was left on a knife edge after they suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of an Egil Olsen-inspired Norway.

Gary Caldwell was sent off after 33 minutes and John Arne Riise scored from the resulting deflected free-kick.Morten Gamst Pedersen drove in the second on the stroke of half-time.Erik Huseklepp turned in the third and Pedersen fired in a free-kick as coach Olsen’s Norway revived their chances of reaching the play-offs from Group Nine.

Defeat means Scotland will probably now need to win their two remaining matches, at home to Macedonia and group winners Netherlands, to make those matches as one of the best-placed runners-up.Scotland manager George Burley had made some brave selection decisions, preferring Kenny Miller to talisman James McFadden up front and choosing Graham Alexander ahead of Paul Hartley as the holding midfielder.Norway might have started the match bottom of Group Nine, but they now had their own national hero Olsen in charge.

Trouble flares at Gills match – video

Video: trouble flares at Priestfield

“Gillingham’s 5-0 victory over Swindon was marred by trouble after the match. There was some fighting among the fans during the Gills’ League 1 opener, resulting in eight Swindon supporters and two Blues fans being ejected from the Priestfield Stadium. But the majority of the trouble took place outside the ground.Police did their best to separate the supporters after the final whistle but there were some clashes between fans.Officers acted quickly to keep the two sides apart – forming lines across the streets and using police dogs to disperse the crowds.

Some Swindon fans were escorted into Gillingham railway station by officers.A police helicopter circled the ground both before and after the match and some roads were closed to traffic. The kick-off was at 12.30pm, after Kent Police requested to bring the match forward to keep trouble to a minimum. But it is thought some pubs in Gillingham opened early. It is not known how many arrests were made.”
