Beckham clashes with another fan

David Beckham in action for LA Galaxy
Beckham was fined £600 for clashing with a Galaxy fan last week

“England midfielder David Beckham was involved in another confrontation with a fan during Los Angeles Galaxy’s match on Saturday.

Beckham, 34, exchanged words with a man in an England shirt during the Galaxy’s 1-1 draw with the Kansas City Wizards.

Beckham, who was fined following a clash with a fan last week, claimed the spectator insulted his wife Victoria.”He shouldn’t actually be wearing that shirt because what he was saying about my wife was a disgrace,” he said. The former England captain was fined $1,000 (£600) by Major League Soccer last Friday following a confrontation with fans during a recent friendly against AC Milan.

Beckham, who missed part of the Major League Soccer season earlier this year when he joined the Italian giants on loan, was booed by a section of the home crowd during the game.At half-time, he approached one group of fans and appeared to challenge them to meet him on the pitch.

Security staff intervened, and police arrested a fan who left the stands.Beckham joined Milan on loan because he was keen to satisfy England boss Fabio Capello’s demand that he play at the highest level to remain in contention for international selection. He is England’s most capped outfield player, with 112 appearances, and is keen to play on until the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa”

Cops target soccer thugs at terminal
Sunday Sun
26 July 2009
by Adam Jupp

SUSPECTED soccer thugs have been stopped from travelling to the continent for Sunderland’s pre-season tour.

Police mounted a special operation aimed at preventing trouble flaring as the Black Cats compete in the prestigious Amsterdam tournament this weekend. They swooped to arrest six yobs already the subject of football banning orders who had failed to surrender their passports ahead of the European friendly fixtures.

And efforts were made to stop other suspected troublemakers making the trip by seizing their passports at hastily-arranged court hearings.Ian Kenny, 30, of Queen Alexandra Road, Sunderland, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court, where an application was lodged to have him hit with a stadium ban.He is opposing the move and a full hearing has been set for October but in the meantime, he was given bail conditions meaning he was forced to surrender his travel documents.

A similar attempt was made to block Black Cats fan David Flanagan from travelling but former club skipper Kevin Ball wrote a letter in defence of the 52-year-old, of Charnwood Court, South Shields. It said: “I have known David Flanagan for 19 years, and in that time he has been of exemplary character towards me and my family, for which I am always grateful.“I am currently under-18s coach at Sunderland and the support he has shown towards the players has always been brilliant. He attends our training sessions, home and away games, and has travelled abroad to show support and a love towards our club.

“I am honoured to not only recognise David as a true supporter of our club, but to also value him as a friend on whom I can always depend.”That was despite the fact he was arrested for running in front of Ajax fans at the Stadium of Light and kissing the badge of rival team Feyenoord. Ajax is the team hosting the tournament, during which saw Sunderland play Benfica on Friday night and take on Athletico Madrid tonight.

Flanagan is also contesting the move and there was a similar application to impose a bail condition preventing him from travelling overseas. But district Judge Roger Elsey refused and he has made the trip.To back up the enforcement action, Northumbria Police’s football intelligence unit has also has a presence at Newcastle Airport and the North Shields ferry terminal between Thursday and today.

On Thursday, 150 fans travelled by ferry to Holland and 48 travelled from the airport. On Friday, 80 used the airport, with no fans on the ferry.Chief Insp John Barnes said: “As well as having several officers across in Holland for the duration of the tournament we have also taken preventative action at home to prevent trouble.

As part of this we have officers at the airport and the port monitoring fans. So far things have been very quiet with fans in good spirits.”There is nothing to suggest there will be any disorder. Sunderland away fans are traditionally well behaved and we would expect them to respect the ground regulations and requests from local police and we are confident everyone will enjoy themselves.”Anyone found causing problems inside or outside the ground risk being arrested and banned from future matches.”

Birmingham man jailed for vicious attack on linesman

A THUG who smashed a linesman’s jaw during a Sunday league football match has been jailed for a year.

Leon White punched 56-year-old Thomas Stanley so hard the victim needed surgery to repair his jaw and still suffers pain more than six months after the incident on January 11.The attack happened during a Sunday League game between Small Heath Alliance and Warren Athletic at Cooksey Lane Sports Field in Kingstanding. The court heard White, 21, of Kingscliffe Road, Small Heath, had been a spectator at the match when he started shouting “banter” at Mr Stanley, accusing him of cheating and mocking his age.A row broke out between the two and White was sent from the field by the referee.White had previouslyadmitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on Mr Stanley. Passing sentence, Recorder Peter Andrews QC threw out claims that White had been provoked.

“I realise emotions run high during football games and, remembering the words of Sir Alex Ferguson, football isn’t a matter of life and death, it’s much more important than that,” he said.“In my judgement there was no provocation here at all. There’s no grounds of provocation for very serious violent offences.”After the hearing, Mr Stanley said he was pleased with the outcome but he had lost interest in football and had even cancelled his season ticket at Aston Villa.“It sends out a strong message that Sunday morning league games are not the place to express physical violence,” he said.“I don’t feel proud that someone is in jail, but in respect of my injuries and what I’m gong to have to go through in the future it does feel justified.

“Every minute of every day is affected by what happened. It wakes me up in the night. It affects my life and it affects my work.“I don’t go out and socialise any more. I’m worried about what’s going to happen. I used to be a very social person, but not any more.“Watching football isn’t the same any more. Both my sons have quit football as well.“I’ve got to go in for further dental treatment and the suspicion is I’m going to have to have my jaw re-fractured and re-set. I’m not looking forward to that at all. It’s going to bring it all back to me.”Acting Det Sgt, James Aston, who investigated the incident, said: “We’re pleased with the result and we hope people now understand the message that we don’t want violence on the football field.”
