Manchester City 1 United 0: Fergie rattled by Tevez jibe and brands City ‘stupid and arrogant’

By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 8:46 PM on 25th July 2009

“Sir Alex Ferguson has launched an extraordinary attack on Manchester City, labelling United’s big-spending neighbours ‘stupid and arrogant’ and a ‘small club with a small mentality’.Clearly angry at City’s attempts to portray themselves as rivals for silverware this season and as Manchester’s ‘real’ club, in particular by celebrating the capture of United striker Carlos Tevez on a huge city centre billboard, Ferguson dismissed their chances of reaching even the top four this season. And he claimed that their new £25million striker, Emmanuel Adebayor, had actually been offered to United and Chelsea after he had agreed the deal to leave Arsenal for City, whom he believes are attracting players mainly because they are paying big wages.Ferguson’s attack on City came in an interview during United’s four-match Far Eastern tour which ends with a game in China today. United believe the thousands of fans who have been flocking even to watch them train confirms that they are still the biggest club in the world, despite the riches now available to City manager Mark Hughes after the takeover by Sheik Mansour.Calling City’s decision to plaster one side of a building on Manchester’s central Deansgate with a huge poster of Tevez proclaiming ‘Welcome to Manchester’ – United’s stadium is sited in the adjacent Borough of Trafford – ‘stupid and arrogant’ Ferguson said: ‘It’s City isn’t it? They are a small club, with a small mentality. All they can talk about is Manchester United, that’s all they’ve done and they can’t get away from it.

‘It is a go at us, that’s the one thing it is. They think taking Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff. I thought he would go to City a long time ago.’Ferguson agrees that City’s spending has added spice to the coming season, but he claims that Mark Hughes’s expensively assembled team will still struggle to break up the big four of United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. He picks out the Gunners, however, as the club most likely to concede ground.”City will want to be challenging for the top four, but it won’t be easy,’ said Sir Alex. ‘That top four has been established for quite a while.

Blue mood: Fergie hit out at 'arrogant' City

In the end it was Jeffrey Ntuka’s effort minutes before half-time that proved the difference between the two sides.

Former Arsenal striker Adebayor, signed this week from Arsenal for £25m, was handed a first start by Mark Hughes, while another new-boy, Gareth Barry, also played alongside the likes of Shay Given, Nigel de Jong, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Craig Bellamy. After a quiet start Martin Petrov and Adebayor both were on the wrong ends of clattering challenges by Chiefs players during the opening 14 minutes, but survived to play on.But City youngster Javan Vidal, a product of the club’s academy, was not so fortunate and was forced off the field after 20 minutes following a collision with Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune – Tal Ben-Haim coming on in his place.

Barry had the first real chance for his side after another good cross from the left touchline by the lively Petrov, but his 18-yard shot just short of the half-hour mark was straight at the Chiefs goalkeeper. The visitors then made another change shortly before the break replacing Richard Dunne with Pablo Zabaleta as the City captain aggravated a knee injury. In front of goal, all the signs continued to look encouraging with Petrov, Adebayor and Bellamy linking up nicely, until the final ball, which let Hughes’ side down. But it was the visiting goalkeeper Given that was forced to make the first real save, which was in the 41st minute when Nkosinathi Nhleko’s shot caused the Republic of Ireland international to dive low to his left and tip the ball wide.

The resulting George Lebese corner caused panic in the penalty area and Ntuka drove the ball home from close-range to hand his side the half-time lead, albeit with a suspicion of handball in his control.City kept the same players on after the restart with Adebayor’s timely run 10 minutes in almost paying dividends, but, after seeing his initial cross-goal pass come back into his path, the Togo striker blazed over when he should have hit the target.Three minutes later, newly-married Robinho was thrown on for Petrov, but he too failed to inspire the Eastlands club with even half chances proving few and far between.

With 25 minutes to play, a head injury brought Nedum Onuoha’s game to an end – Vladimir Weiss coming on in his place. And the Slovak winger almost helped his side snatch a late goal when his mazy run down the right saw him feed the ball to Robinho, who somehow dragged his shot wide as the game ended disappointingly for the visitors.”

Fans’ anger as Hearts opener at Tannadice is switched for ESPN

THE Hearts Supporters Trust said today that ESPN have shown little consideration for fans of the Edinburgh club by moving their season-opening SPL match to a Monday evening.
Hearts will begin their 2009-10 campaign at Tannadice against Dundee United at 7.45pm on Monday, 17 August after the broadcaster announced yesterday that the fixture would be screened live and, as such, rescheduled from Saturday, 15 August. The first leg of the club’s Europa League play-off tie takes place three days later on Thursday, 20 August, giving manager Csaba Laszlo less time to prepare for what could be a hazardous European encounter on foreign soil.

Derek Watson, chairman of the Hearts Supporters Trust, said clubs and supporters can only reluctantly accept that Scottish football is now governed by television and finance.”The game is being dictated by television but it’s not good for the Hearts fans to have to go to Tannadice on a Monday night,” he said. “It’s the first league game of the season, everybody will want to go and it’s not easy to do it on a Monday night. There are travel problems, the Forth Bridge for example, and Hearts would have opened the season with a huge support. The fact it’s changed will make quite a big difference and I’m sure it will cost Dundee United gate money too.

“Because of the way the SPL is run, the supporters are not considered. All fans accept that kick-offs will change because of TV and the Hearts fans accept it because of finances. But to have the first game of the season on a Monday night is a little bit beyond that. I have sympathy with all the supporters from all the clubs who have games changed, it’s not ideal.”Hearts’ second league game of the campaign has also been rescheduled, with Rangers now due to visit Tynecastle on Sunday, 23 August for a 12.45pm kick off. Laszlo and his 23-man squad arrived in Southampton last night ahead of today’s friendly with Alan Pardew’s side. Adrian Mrowiec, the Polish midfielder, did not travel south and it is expected that his departure from Tynecastle will be confirmed imminently. Marian Kello, the Slovakian goalkeeper, is with the team as he remains in negotiations over a new contract.Meanwhile, Hearts have opted against moving for the Slovakian international striker Adam Nemec, who will sign a three-year contract with German club Kaiserslautern on Monday having waited in vain for an offer from Tynecastle.

The 23-year-old was courted by Csaba Laszlo, the Hearts manager, but was due to fly to Germany today to conclude his transfer from Belgium’s Racing Genk. Nemec’s agent, Karol Csonto, said: “He is joining Kaiserslautern because there has been no offer from Hearts. We knew they were interested but nothing official has come forward so Adam has decided on the move to Germany.”Laszlo remains keen on the Macedonian international forward Ilco Naumoski, whose representatives are continuing dialogue with Hearts officials in the hope of agreeing contract terms.
