Motherwell 8-1 Flamurtari (8-2)

Jamie Murphy celebrates his opening goal
Murphy opened the scoring for Motherwell against the Albanians

“Jamie Murphy grabbed a hat-trick as Motherwell hammered Albanian side Flamurtari Vlore to ease into the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Murphy fired home after 13 minutes and Paul Slane set him up for the second before firing in the third himself.Ross Forbes scored a penalty, Murphy fired in the fifth and Shaun Hutchinson headed in, all before the break, before Forbes fired his second from distance.Odise Roshi drove home for Flamurtari before Robert McHugh restored the gap.It ensured that Motherwell will face Steaua Bucharest in the next round in a week’s time after the Romanians beat Hungarians Ujpest after two 2-1 wins.New signings Steve Jennings and Chris Humphrey had been handed their Well debuts in midfield at Excelsior Stadium.

But manager Jim Gannon sprung a surprise by dropping both full-backs, Stephen Saunders and Stevie Hammell.Jim O’Brien was on the right, with Mark Reynolds moving across to the left, with Hutchinson coming into central defence.O’Brien, normally a winger, was under pressure early on and Marius Ngjele fired wide, while Fraser did well to block Devis Mema’s shot. However, any nerves Motherwell might have been feeling were settled with the opening goal after 13 minutes.

Paul Slane makes an acrobatic celebration
Slane scored Motherwell’s second goal and set up the third

Murphy and Jennings were both denied in a frantic goalmouth scramble after Shpetim Mocka fumbled Forbes’ free-kick and the goalkeeper parried John Sutton’s header from a Slane corner and Murphy forced home.

Well took the lead in the tie three minutes later when Forbes sent Slane clear from inside his own half and Murphy tucked home the rebound after the winger’s shot hit the post.

Slane had just six minutes to wait for his goal when he cut inside and fired just inside the post from 25 yards.Bledion Guga clumsily pushed Sutton inside the box and the striker, who had missed from the spot in Vlore, handed the ball to Forbes, who sent Mocka the wrong way after 28 minutes.Murphy completed his treble in the 34th minute with a low drive from 20 yards that slid through Mocka’slegs.Hutchinson diverted a Forbes free-kick just inside the post in the 38th minute and Forbes rattled home his second from 20 yards following Sutton’s lay-off in the 50th minute.

Flamurtari substitute Elham Galica should given some comfort to the 50 away fans following a mistake by Craigan, but he slipped the ball wide from 12 yards. And, although Motherwell missed a series of half chances, it was the visitors who grabbed a 64th-minute consolation when Roshi ran on to a simple through ball and slotted past Michael Fraser.McHugh continued the goal spree in the 72nd minute when he rolled the ball into an empty net after Mocka had dropped a high ball.Motherwell had been forced to use Airdrie’s ground because of summer work required on Fir Park. They had lost their opening game of the season there, the first leg of their Europa League opener against Llanelli, but left their neighbour’s ground this time on a high.”

Vaduz 2-0 Falkirk (agg 2-1)

Vaduz knocked Falkirk out of the Europa League
Vaduz overturned Falkirk’s 1-0 lead in Liechtenstein

Falkirk’s Europa League adventure ended at their first qualifying hurdle with an extra time defeat to Vaduz.

“The Bairns took a 1-0 lead to Liechtenstein, but Vaduz applied pressure from the kick-off and Emil Noll slotted in on 23 minutes.Visiting goalkeeper Robert Olejnik helped force the tie to extra time, but Franz Burgmeier scored the winner on 105 minutes.Falkirk’s night was made worse as Carl Finnigan was sent off after full-time.

Bairns manager Eddie May had said prior to the match that he would not ask his side to sit back and defend their slim advantage at the Rheinpark Stadion. But, employing a more cautious 4-2-3-1 formation, that is the job they were forced to do as the hosts came out strongly to restore parity. The Liechtenstein cup winners threw players forward, and in the early stages Burgmeier, Michael Stegmayer and Damian Bellon all went close. And they were rewarded on 23 minutes when the Bairns failed to properly clear a set-piece and centre-half Noll was able to turn Brian McLean and flick past Olejnik’s despairing hand.

The home side took heart from their breakthrough, and Olejnik had to look sharp to stop shots from Bellon and Burgmeier from distance.Midfielder Marc Twaddle missed Falkirk’s best chance with a rare effort in the second period, when he headed Burton O’Brien’s corner past the post.More heroics from Olejnik ensured the tie went to extra-time, where substitute Flynn had a glorious extra-time effort blocked by Vaduz goalkeeper Peter Jehle’s first save of the contest. And just as it looked like the visitors were enjoying their best spell of the game, Burgmeier took the wind out their sails just 30 seconds before the midway point of extra time, lashing a shot past Olejnik from 18 yards. After the final whistle Finnigan was shown a straight red card for an alleged elbow on the Vaduz captain in the tunnel.”

Shrimps fan banned from every ground in the UK
Lancaster Guardian
23 July 2009

A FOOTBALL fan has been banned from all English football grounds after shouting racist abuse at a youngster.

Police officers applied for Anthony McClinton to be made the subject of a Football Banning Order following the incident involving an 11-year-old boy at Morecambe Football Club’s Christie Park ground on March 28 this year.McClinton, of West End Road, Morecambe, appeared before Lancaster Magistrates last Friday and admitted racially aggravated public disorder. The 48-year-old tried to appeal against the banning order, which prevents him from attending any designated football match in the UK, but magistrates agreed it should be imposed.McClinton is also banned from entering a designated area surrounding Morecambe Football Club’s ground six hours prior to, and six hours after, each home match.DC Jon Shaw, Morecambe police, said: “McClinton shouted racial abuse at a young child and this is clearly both unacceptable and disgraceful behaviour that will not be tolerated at Morecambe Football Club – or at any other club in the country.”Football banning orders are a useful policing tool that help us to prevent those who cannot behave in an acceptable manner from ruining the enjoyment of the game for genuine fans.”McClinton was also ordered to pay a fine and costs. The offence took place at the Morecambe v Luton Town FC League 2 fixture.”
