Fined Ajax fan was ‘charged’ by Bristol City supporters
Bristol Evening Post
17 July 2009

A Dutch football fan fought with a Bristol City fan when home supporters charged towards rival supporters after the Robins’ friendly match against Ajax.Nicky Tielen was fined £360 by city magistrates when he admitted using unlawful violence in Brunel Way after the game at Ashton Gate on Wednesday. The court was told the 20-year-old was among a group of Ajax fans being escorted from the ground by police when Bristol City supporters ran towards them and fighting broke out.Crown Prosecutor Jane Warren said: “The Ajax supporters were walking along the Cumberland Basin towards Winterstoke Road and City fans began to run towards them. Ajax fans broke away from the police escort and 40 people, from both sides, engaged in fighting.”One of the police officers saw Mr Tielen punching a City fan. When he was interviewed by police he agreed that he had been punching the City fan but said he only did that after he was hit first.

Ms Warren told District Judge Hine the violence broke out at about 9.45pm.She said: “There were a great number of people arrested. As I understand it other people have been prosecuted. Those who come from Holland have been fined and gone on their way and for those on the City side, football banning orders are being considered.”The Ajax fans were being orderly until the City fans came towards them, at which point they broke free and entered the fray.”John Quinn, defending, said drivers were forced to stop their cars on the road as a result of the brawl. He said his client, who lives with his parents and works laying roads in Holland, had been in the country since Monday and visited England for a short break and to watch the Bristol City vs Ajax match.Mr Quinn said: “If had not been for the actions of the Bristol City fans, he would have gone his way happily.”District judge Hine fined Teilen £360, which is one week’s wages, and ordered him to pay £40 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

He said: “You have pleaded guilty to an offence which is potentially quite serious but I understand you got into this because English fans were behaving worse than you did.”It’s a shame you got involved in this if you were enjoying your stay in England and hope you go home with reasonable memories of the country.“On Thursday, the Bristol Evening Post reported that two other Dutch football fans had been given banning orders after violence flared on the day of the Ajax match. There were 10 arrests for assault, violence and disorder, including nine Dutch fans and one City supporter. At one point, police were faced with a 30-strong group of drunk Dutch fans, all carrying bottles and pint glasses, who ran at them in Canons Way near the city centre. Two Dutch fans, one a 21-year-old student and the other a 25-year-old builder, were given conditional discharges for assaulting police officers and each banned from football matches in England and Wales for three years. Two more Dutch fans were arrested for possession of cocaine on Tuesday and were cautioned and released.Bristol City officials said almost 11,000 people attended the match against the four-times European champions Ajax, which beat City 4-0.”
