FA ban Newcastle from Dutch friendly but allow Black Cats to play in Amsterdam Tournament
Daily Mail

By Colin Young

“The FA have have ordered Newcastle to pull out of a pre-season friendly in Utrecht to settle the escalating row over a potential clash with north east neighbours Sunderland.FA chiefs took the decision after the Mayor of Amsterdam voiced his concerns about the two sets of fans going to games just 30 miles apart from each other on Sunday, 26th July. The ruling allows the Black Cats to play in the prestigious Amsterdam Tournament.A spokesman for the FA said: ‘Following conversations with the KNVB and the Mayor of Amsterdam’s office, The FA has reluctantly withdrawn permission for Newcastle United to play a friendly
‘Following concerns raised by the Mayor of Amsterdam, it became clear that only one of the two teams would be able to travel to Holland and The FA actively sought to resolve the situation.’Priority was given to Sunderland for three reasons; their application to play was received first, tickets have already been sold to their supporters, and travel arrangements have already been made. Newcastle United have not yet sold any tickets to their supporters.’Mayor Job Cohen was unhappy at the prospect of the two North East rivals playing on Sunday July 26, just 30 miles from each other. Police in England were also worried about the thousands travelling on ferries across the North Sea that weekend.Sunderland have already sold more than 1,500 tickets for the Amsterdam Tournament, which this season involves Atletico Madrid, Benfica and hosts Ajax and which in the past has attracted the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

Newcastle cancel Utrecht friendly over hooligan fears

• FA tells Geordies to cancel as Sunderland are playing nearby
• Police feared rival British fans would end up fighting

Newcastle fans will not be going to the Netherlands for a pre-season friendly as police feared them clashing with Sunderland fans whose club are playing in a tournament in Amsterdam.

“Newcastle United have been forced to cancel a pre-season friendly at Utrecht on Sunday 26 July because Sunderland are playing 30 miles away in the Amsterdam tournament on the same day and police in both the Netherlands and England are concerned that fans of the two north-east rivals could end up fighting each other.Such fears had earlier prompted the mayor of Amsterdam to demand Sunderland’s withdrawal from the four-team tournament that also involves Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Benfica at the Amsterdam Arena but the Football Association intervened on the Wearside club’s behalf.FA officials said Sunderland should be allowed to participate and have told Newcastle they cannot play in Utrecht. In a statement the officials said: “The FA has reluctantly withdrawn permission for Newcastle United to play in a friendly in Utrecht on Sunday 27 July. Priority was given to Sunderland for three reasons: their application to play in Amsterdam was received first; they have already sold tickets to supporters and travel arrangements have been made; and Newcastle United have not sold any tickets.”With police in the two countries anxious about trouble possibly flaring at Schipol airport, on planes flying between Amsterdam and Newcastle, on North Sea Ferries transporting fans to the Netherlands and then in central Amsterdam, there is to be no trek to Utrecht for the Toon Army. That said, judging by the lack of ticket sales, such fears may have been exaggerated.Newcastle later released a statement saying they were “extremely disappointed by this decision, especially given the fact that on 30 June 2009, the Football Association had approved their application to play in Utrecht, this following discussions with the Dutch FA, Dutch Police and our own UK Football Policing Unit.”The club now finds itself with its pre-season programme of games disrupted and in the unenviable position of trying to organise another game over that weekend in a very short space of time.“It should be noted also that Newcastle United had already organised flights and hotel accommodation for its travelling party for the game in Holland.”Newcastle United would like to apologise to its supporters for this situation, particularly those that may have already made travel arrangements. However it is clearly a matter that is completely out of its own control.”

Toon face race to get another game
Shields Gazette
14 July 2009

NEWCASTLE United are in a race against time to line up another friendly after their pre-season game at FC Utrecht was axed over hooligan fears. The Football Association yesterday pulled the plug on the July 26 game at the Stadion Galgenwaard over fears Newcastle fans would clash with Sunderland supporters in Holland for their team’s involvement in the high-profile Amsterdam Tournament. And United will have a blank weekend in their pre-season programme – unless last-minute opposition can be found.Caretaker coach Chris Hughton spoke to club secretary Lee Charnley early this morning as efforts started to find opposition. However, with English and European clubs having finalised their pre-season programmes some time ago, there are no guarantees a game against high-quality team can be arranged, though Hughton is hopeful.”The decision was only made yesterday, so it’s obviously very fresh, but we’ll certainly try to arrange another game,” Hughton told the Gazette.”I spoke to Lee Charnley this morning, and he’s trying to get another fixture. The process has started to replace that game, and hopefully we’ll get something sorted out.”Newcastle yesterday issued a statement which said the club was “extremely disappointed” by the FA’s decision, which was taken after talks with their counterparts in Holland, the KNVB.”

Toon ban hits fans in pocket
Shields Gazette

LOYAL Newcastle United fans have been left counting the cost after the club was forced to cancel a pre-season friendly in Holland.

“The FA withdrew its permission to allow United to play FC Utrecht on Sunday, July 26, because Sunderland are playing 30 miles away in the Amsterdam tournament on the same day.Police in the Netherlands and England were concerned fans could end up fighting. But some supporters have already booked flights for the trip.A spokesman for the Newcastle United Supporters’ Club said: “Any fans that have paid for accommodation and travel will be out of pockets. The fear of violence prompted the mayor of Amsterdam to demand Sunderland’s withdrawal from the tournament, which involves Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Benfica. An FA spokesman said: “Priority was given to Sunderland for three reasons: their application to play in Amsterdam was received first, they have already sold tickets to supporters and travel arrangements have been made, and Newcastle United have not sold any tickets.“A Newcastle United statement said: “We would like to apologise to supporters for this situation … however, it is out of our control.”

Officer gets 6 years in jail for 2007 death of fan
USA Today
14 July 2009

AREZZO, Italy (AP) — “A police officer was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison Tuesday for the death of a soccer fan that caused riots across Italy in 2007.Prosecutors had asked the jury to convict Luigi Spaccarotella of murder and the manslaughter verdict brought cries of “shame, shame” from family and friends of the victim.Gabriele Sandri, a 26-year-old disc jockey from Rome and a Lazio fan, died in November 2007 after being hit in the neck by a bullet while sitting in a car at a highway rest stop.Defense lawyers argued Spaccarotella had fired shots to disperse a scuffle between two groups of rival fans, while prosecutors maintained he had purposely aimed at the car when the clash was over.As news of the death spread, soccer fans in Rome, Milan and other cities rioted, smashing windows, hurling stones at officers and attacking a police barracks near the capital’s stadium.Tuesday’s verdict could set the stage for more violence. Sandri’s friends were ejected from the courtroom for voicing their anger and continued to protest outside the building.Sandri’s mother fainted after the verdict and required an ambulance. His father Giorgio called the ruling “shameful” and said the family would appeal. Speaking to Italy’s Sky TV news channel, he also urged fans to “stay cool” and not protest violently”
