Hooligan armed with pool ball inside sock
This is Lincolnshire
08 July 2009

A football hooligan faces jail after arming himself with a pool ball hidden inside a sock during violence before an FA Cup tie in Lincoln.Danny Walsh , who was banned from attending matches when trouble flared last November, was among a group of Kettering supporters trapped in a Lincoln High Street pub as local fans hurled bottles, sticks and stones at the building.

Lincoln Crown Court heard that although police provided an escort for visiting fans from the Golden Cross to nearby Sincil Bank, Walsh stayed behind in the pub.A jury was told that when Walsh left to buy a takeaway meal he was handed the makeshift weapon by a friend and was involved in an altercation with a group of Lincoln fans.

But Christopher Lowe, prosecuting, said when police arrived Walsh, who was wearing a wig and a false moustache in an attempt to conceal his identity, fled with another man along the High Street. The pair were tracked by CCTV cameras to St Botolph’s Court old people’s complex where they hid in a garden. The officer said Walsh was arrested and the sock containing the pool ball was found in the undergrowth.

Walsh (30) of Hutchison Avenue, Broughton, Kettering, denied possession of an offensive weapon on November 18, 2008 but the jury took just 11 minutes to return a guilty verdict.Judge Robert Alan Brown remitted sentence for the Lincoln offence to Northampton and remanded Walsh into custody.Walsh is due to be sentenced next week for both an affray in Kettering and the Lincoln offence.”

Goalkeeper Kenny fails drugs test

Paddy Kenny
Kenny will have to wait to discover his fate after his test returned positive

Sheffield United have suspended keeper Paddy Kenny for failing a drugs test.

Kenny tested positive for a banned substance, ephedrine, following last season’s Championship play-off semi-final second leg against Preston.

Ephedrine is believed to be present in a cough mixture that the Republic of Ireland player bought over the counter, BBC Radio Sheffield understands.”We confirm Paddy has been suspended. This is an ongoing, confidential matter,” read a club statement.

The 31-year-old will now be subject to a disciplinary inquiry by the Football Association and faces a range of possible sanctions – from a reprimand up to a two-year ban.The FA and UK Sport – the agency responsible for drug testing programmes in sport – have so far refused to comment.

BBC sports news correspondent Gordon Farquhar said Kenny will be given the opportunity to explain himself at a tribunal, which will decide if a punishment is deserved, and if so, of what duration”They can impose anything from a warning to a two-year ban. It’s going to come down to whether the science backs up Kenny’s claim that this was nothing more sinister than a bit of cough medicine,” said Farquhar.”

Ben Foster
Foster missed the end of last season with a thumb injury

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has agreed terms on a new four-year contract with the club.

Foster, 26, battled with Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak for the keeper’s jersey throughout last season but was hampered by injuries. And despite admitting that a lack of first-team football could compromise his international prospects, Foster has chosen to stay at Old Trafford.”I’m really happy to commit my future to the club,” he said.”
