Can you id pitch invasion football fans?

Published Date: 30 June 2009

POLICE have appealed for help in identifying soccer fans involved in a pitch invasion at Barnsley.

“Photographs of four football fans have been issued by police. Trouble flared during the match between the Reds and Wolves in April when supporters ran on to the pitch at Oakwell. The game was marred by pitch invasions, with Wolves fans twice running on to the pitch – once when their team equalised and at the final whistle when the 1-1 draw signalled the clinching of the Championship title.Mounted police were forced on to the pitch to keep rival fans apart.Sgt David Lock, who policed the game, said: “These are clear images and I urge anyone who can help identify these men to come forward.

“The actions of a few can have wider implications on the club and the general enjoyment and safety of fans and this behaviour should not be tolerated by Barnsley folk.”We are working closely with Barnsley Football Club to ensure that their true supporters can enjoy watching their team without public order offences and I ask that you work with us to achieve this.”An 18-year-old man, from Great Houghton, Barnsley, has been charged with a public order offence and the assault of a police horse during the pitch invasionA 40-year-old man has also been charged with a public order offence and bailed until July 6.”

SAINTS CHAOS

ABOVE: Matt Le Tissier

1st July 2009

By Peter White

SOUTHAMPTON’S future was thrown even deeper into confusion yesterday as two groups trying to buy the stricken League One club both pulled out of negotiations.

The most significant withdrawal came from the Pinnacle consortium – of which former Saints star Matt Le Tissier was a key part.Earlier a group headed by businessman Marc Jackson, which included Israeli backers, also pulled out.

One of the big stumbling blocks was their failure to overturn a 10-point penalty for going into administration.Le Tissier, who was expected to become chairman, said: “With the ongoing issues with the Football League persisting, our backers have simply refused to provide the requisite funds to complete the takeover.”Meanwhile, the players are due to report back for training today but it is unclear who will coach them as boss Mark Wotte’s contract ran out yesterday – along with his staff.”
