Burnley off to Wembley: Ecstatic Clarets fans party into night

BURNLEY fans partied into the night after the Clarets booked their place at Wembley.

“The club’s amazing season is one match away from ending with a return to the big time after the Clarets handed out a right Royal thrashing to Reading.Supporters at the Madejski Stadium and those who packed pubs across the area went crazy as two wonder goals saw Owen Coyle’s boys book their first trip to the new Wembley. Not since the successful play-off exploits of 1994-95 have the Clarets graced the national stadium.Club receptionist Veronica Simpson spoke for the town when she said: “It’s such a fantastic result for Burnley and Owen Coyle and the team. We’ve beaten Sheffield United twice already this season so bring them on.”After Burnley’s 1-0 win in the play-off semi-final first leg, the team defended superbly to protect the narrow lead in a nail-biting first half. But the second half was Burnley’s. Roared on by a sell out 2,100 support who out-sang their Championship rivals throughout the night, Martin Paterson struck from 25 yards after 51 minutes. Then seven minutes later, Thompson’s deft strike made any remaining butterflies disappear and prompted jubilant celebrations. Burnley were to going to Wembley. And regulars at the Thornton Arms in Worsthorne, just one of the town’s many pubs packed out with Claret and Blue diehards, raised the roof. Nicola Duckworth, 36, a holistic therapist of Chiltern Avenue, said: “Owen Coyle should be our new Prime Minister! Wembley is going to be the best day of my life.”Her father Alan Duckworth, 63, a plumbing and heating engineer, added: “I’m just absolutely over the moon. We’re going to go all the way now.”Teacher Mark Nicholson, 26, of Nelson, said: “I’m just looking forward to Wembley now. Hopefully we’ve got the squad to go all the way.”At the end of the game fans saluted their heroes who have given their all throughout a long season.Owen Coyle was keen to keep any celebrations in check and keep his players focused on Wembley and Sheffield United. And after such a dream season, fans have complete faith that he will lead the Clarets to the Premier League.”
