Football violence at station
Huddersfield Examiner
06 May 2009
by Sam Casey

HUDDERSFIELD Town fans clashed with Leeds United supporters in a railway station brawl.
The rival fans were involved in a disturbance at Wakefield Westgate station as they travelled back from their respective games on the final day of the League One season on Saturday.
Town’s fans had been at the 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient at the London club’s Brisbane Road ground in East London.
The Leeds supporters had watched their side beat Northampton 3-0 at Elland Road.
It is believed the two sets of fans clashed after Town’s contingent got off the train in Wakefield at about 10.30pm.
Marcus Middleton, of the Town Supporters’ Club, had not been at the game but was told of the trouble.
He said: “As far as I understand it, there were about 40 Town fans who had been drinking through most of the day.
When they got to Wakefield, the Leeds fans were there.
He said it was not an organised fight and claimed the Town supporters had been the unsuspecting victims of an attack.
Police were called to the station.
It is not believed anyone was seriously hurt

Leeds fan left with £345 bill after ‘silly bet’
Hartlepool Mail
05 May 2009

A STUPID bet between two football fans resulted in one man being slapped with a £345 bill by magistrates after he ran onto the pitch during a game.
Russell Lee Thaw was in the away end at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park ground for the clash with Leeds United when he made a bet to run onto the pitch.
The 43-year-old Leeds fan, who lives in Pitt Street, Southport, jumped over the Rink End’s metal barrier when Leeds striker Jermain Beckford scored in the second half.
Thaw and another supporter made their way onto the pitch, and were about to jump back into the stand, when a police officer stepped in and arrested Thaw.
Thaw pleaded guilty to entering a playing area without lawful authority or lawful excuse on Saturday, April 25, when he appeared at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court.
Prosecuting, Stephen Hill, said: “At 4.20pm the police officer was situated in the north east corner of the ground adjacent to the Leeds fans in the North stand.
At that point Leeds scored and two men jumped over the metal barrier onto the playing area.
“The other man managed to climb back into the stand, but Mr Thaw did not. He was arrested at the scene and said that he did it for a bet and that he didn’t mean any harm.
“He gave his full details to the police officer and he is of previous good character. Police have not asked for a football banning order.”
Thaw was given a £250 fine, £80 prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
A remorseful Thaw, who represented himself in court, said: “I am very sorry, I didn’t mean any harm.
It was just high spirits and for a silly bet.
“There won’t be any future incidents like this.”
Chairman of the magistrates’ bench John Jenkins said: “I think you will accept that this was a silly thing to do and the consequences could have been much harsher than they are going to be today.”
Thaw was one of six football supporters arrested during the League One clash as another pitch invasion also brought the match to a standstill.
The game was halted for a short time with 10 minutes gone after fighting in the Millhouse Stand saw a number of supporters spill onto the pitch.
Several of those fans – thought to be Leeds supporters in a home section of the stadium – ran towards the away end, with at least one climbing over the barriers and in amongst Pool’s travelling contingent.
The match, which finished with a 1-0 victory for Leeds, was held up briefly while police and stewards restored order.”
