WE’RE NOT SCARED OF MESSI… WE HAVE DROG

Hiddink in training

28th April 2009

By Danny Fullbrook in Barcelona

BATTERING ram Didier Drogba will have Barcelona running scared at the Nou Camp tonight.

That is the opinion of Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink.
Most of the attention ahead of the game has been focused on the threat of Barca’s wonderkid Lionel Messi.
But as Hiddink points out, who needs a Messi when you have a Drog?
The Ivory Coast hitman has been in blistering form as Chelsea have surged towards their second European Cup Final in succession.”

Burnley fans blast back at police chief who partly blames them for Southampton violence

Burnley Citizen
28 April 2009
By Chris Hopper

A POLICE chief’s claim that Burnley fans should shoulder some of the blame for disorder by Southampton hooligans has been rapped ‘disgraceful’.
Chief Superintendent Matthew Greening said Clarets fans chanting songs about Southampton’s relegation from the Championship had ‘provoked’ the violence that marred the end of Saturday’s 2-2 draw.
But Clarets fans, some of whom were amongst the 2,000 travelling contingent pelted with flares, bottles and coins after the pitch invasion by home supporters, said such banter was “part and parcel of football and the police officer was “talking rubbish”

Lancashire police said that they had received no report from Hampshire police about disorder from Burnley fans, whose behaviour had been “great” all season.
Just three people were arrested after hundreds of home supporters flooded the pitch and began throwing items at the Burnley fans after the draw condemned Southampton to League One football next season.
Mr Greening, who was in charge of Saturday’s police operation, said: “Burnley fans were being quite provocative and they were taking the chance to wind up Southampton fans about being relegated.
“There were some verbals going across the divide but nothing too unusual or out of ordinary.
“We did not get anything in terms of violence from the Burnley supporters but I do think if there had been no provocation at all the Southampton fans would not have approached them at the end of the game.”
Clarets fans who were caught up in the disorder said that Mr Greening was wrong to blame them for provoking the violence.

Alan Beecroft, of Colne Clarets, attended the game. He said: “I have never heard so much rubbish in all my life.
“The Southampton fans misbehaved – it is a simple as that.
“Banter between fans is part of the game, and that is all that took place.
“I think it is disgraceful for the Hampshire police force to blame us for something that is down to choices made by their fans.”
Joyce Haluk, of Burnley Supporters Club, who also attended, added: “If a team is going down you play them and you chant it – it’s just the way it goes.
“I don’t agree with any of the violence, but the chanting is part of the game these days.
“What they were chanting wasn’t even that bad – the worst thing I heard was “going down” and that was it.”
Paul Smith, of Boundary Clarets, said: “It’s turned into a farce because our fans have got a reputation, but I have not seen anyone cause trouble at an away ground for the past five or six years.
“We have a great set of fans, who are vociferous, boisterous and very loyal.”
Burnley Council leader Gordon Birtwistle said his 10-year-old grandson was at the match.
He added: “Singing songs about relegation to teams at the bottom is part and parcel of the game.
“For the Southampton fans to resort to violence is completely out of order. There is no excuse for it whatsoever.”
Chief Insp Jeff Brown, match commander for many of Burnley’s home games, said Clarets fans’ behaviour had been “great” all season.
He said Lancashire officers had received no reports of disorder from Hampshire counterparts.
Burnley FC chief executive Paul Fletcher said: “I cannot comment on anything until I have seen the full police report from the game.
“However, normally our travelling fans are very well behaved.”
Yesterday, videos of the disorder on YouTube, including scenes of flares being hurled at Burnley fans, were attracting thousands of views.
And there were also claims that some of the trouble began after fans of Southampton’s south coast rivals Portsmouth bought tickets for the Burnley section.
Police confirmed one of the arrests followed the ejection of a Portsmouth supporter from the St Mary’s Ground, while the other two were pitch invaders.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s scenes have also raised the prospect of possible sanctions by football chiefs, including fines being dished out.
An FA spokesman said yesterday they were making enquiries about what had happened”

Dermot Desmond, one of Celtic‘s top shareholders, believes the Scottish champions could join the English Premier League within 10 years.Celtic and Rangers have long dominated their own domestic league, and both are eager to challenge themselves south of the border, but so far those attempts have met mutedly in England. However Desmond believes that financial difficulties facing clubs in England will eventually lead the FA and the Premier League to bring in the vast money-making potential of Celtic and Rangers.”They will open up some time to us but I would think it could be in the next 10 years,” Desmond said.”We have no debt. We are probably one of the most independent clubs in the whole of Great Britain and Ireland.”Ten or 11 clubs will go into administration. I would not be surprised if three or four go into administration in the Premier League,” he added.Desmond added that clubs should also cap their spending to safeguard them from financial worries.
