Glentoran’s fan power vital in title run-in

“Glentoran boss Alan McDonald is hoping Glenmen continue to get behind their team this week as the race for the JJB Sports Premiership enters its final stages. The Glens could win the league this week should they win at Coleraine and Linfield slip up at home to Lisburn Distillery. And while no-one in east Belfast is thinking that far ahead, McDonald believes the fans will play their part in the run-in.“The fans were magnificent (on Saturday) and really spurred them on and it does make a big difference,” he said.“I can’t overstate that – it really does help when the fans get behind the players. It gives them confidence and brings that extra couple of per cent out of them.”McDonald should have a full squad to pick from on Saturday with Andy Waterworth nearing full fitness.”

Top 10 goalkeepers’ goals – a viewing spectacular

Paul Robinson (Pic: Getty)

Yeovil Town’s on-loan goalkeeper Chris Weale netted a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser for his League One side last night in the 2-2 draw with Hereford United. That fairytale story prompted us to look for other goalies who have broken free from their defensive shackles and starred in their opponents’ penalty areas and come up with football’s cherished currency: GOALS.

1) To kick us off – and show other goalkeepers how it is done – here is Brazilian (he had to be!) international Rogério Ceni. The 36-year-old, capped 17 times for the Seleção, had Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos and friends above him in the national free-kick / penalty pecking order.

But for São Paulo, his domestic club of 19 years (and counting), he gets more of a chance. And – with over 80 goals (in 2005 he managed a jaw-dropping 20!) – you can’t blame his team-mates for stepping aside.

2) Perhaps it’s something in the South American water? Here is another legendary ‘keeper who scored a sack-full of goals in his career: Paraguay’s José Luis Chilavert.

Capped 74 times for his country, the former Vélez Sársfield and Strasbourg star scored eight international goals. Chilavert, whose middle name is Felix, proved quite the cat in between the sticks – as the first three minutes of the below video show. But what we’re more interested in his goals, which you will find from 3.04 onwards.

3) Back on home soil, at the ripe old age of 37 former Welsh international Mark Crossley, playing his 481st career match, scored his first and only goal – a last-minute leveller for Sheffield Wednesday against Southampton two days before Christmas in 2006. And the ex-Nottingham Forest stopper is rather boastful after hitting the back of the net!

4) German Hans-Jörg Butt, Bayer Leverkusen’s former goalkeeper and penalty taker, got egg on his face in April 2004 after he slotted a spot kick to put his team 3-1 up against Schalke – one of 26 goals he managed in the Bundesliga. As Butt, selected three times for his country, celebrates and trots back to his goal, he … Well, see for yourselves.

5) Here Manchester United stopper Tomasz Kuszczak concedes a goal to his opposite man while on international duty for Poland. In the friendly – a warm-up for the World Cup in Germany three years ago – Luís Enrique “Neco” Martínez Rodríguez of Colombia leaves the Red Devil red faced.

6) Jimmy Glass’s goal, deep into stoppage time, for Carlisle United against Plymouth Argyle in the final game of the 1998/99 season, gave his loan team the win they needed to escape relegation to the Football Conference.

In only his third (and final) game for the club – he moved back to Swindon – the ‘keeper was carried off the field by jubilant Blues’ fans and is regarded as a club hero. The stuff that dreams are made of …

7) From one goalkeeping hero to another – Manchester United’s Peter Schmeichel. In the 1994/95 season he great Dane, capped for his country a record 129 times, netted in the final seconds of a Uefa Cup clash against Russian side Rotor Volgograd. Though it drew Sir Alex Ferguson’s team level, United were still eliminated on the away goals rule.

8) Paul Robinson, fully adorned in banana-yellow kit, will always be remembered for letting in THAT goal against Croatia. But in July 2007 against Watford the former Tottenham stopper pelted a free-kick from 88-yards that looped over another England candidate, Ben Foster’s head. Oh for a talented English goalkeeper! And Robbo proved he is equally at ease with his head – here he scores for Leeds against Swindon back in the League Cup five years ago.

9) In March 2007 Andrés Palop was Seville’s saviour in a last-16 tie against Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. Trailing 2-1, the defending champions were staring at elimination, but the ‘keeper’s headed goal in the fourth minute of injury time forced extra time.

Sevilla went on to win the match 3-2 – and went on to win the whole competition (Palop saved three of Espanyol’s penalties in the final).

10) This is a cracker, too. South Korean goalkeeper Jung Sung-Ryong, while representing his country’s Under-23s against Ivory Coast, hit the back of the next with a HUGE kick.

And, as a bit of a bonus, here is 11) We can’t quite work out who this is, but it is well worth a look.”

Roy Keane was today confirmed as the new manager of Ipswich, less than a day after the club had announced the sacking of Jim Magilton. The former Manchester United midfielder, who has been out of work since leaving his position as Sunderland manager in December, has signed a two-year contract and will be charged with leading Ipswich into the Premier League. Magilton was sacked yesterday after failing to reach this year’s Championship play-offs.”I truly believe that I am joining a club that has the potential, ambition and infrastructure to once again be a Premier League side,” Keane, who steered Sunderland to promotion from the Championship in 2006-07, told Ipswich’s website this morning. “The club’s owner [Marcus Evans] and chief executive [Simon Clegg] impressed upon me their total focus on achieving this quest at the earliest opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.”Keane’s appointment comes just two days after former British Olympic Association head Clegg was installed as the club’s chief executive. There had been some speculation that Keane would never return to football, but in a February interview with the Irish Times he insisted not only that he would move away from Manchester, but that he would consider managing in the Championship again, given suitable circumstances.”I am delighted that Roy has agreed to join us and we are completely aligned in our ambitions for Ipswich Town,” said Evans, who was listed 30th in FourFourTwo magazine’s football rich list with an estimated worth of £200m earlier this year. “He has extensive contacts in the game and is a proven winner who encourages his team to play the attractive football that Ipswich Town fans have come to expect. I believe he is the right man to take this club where we want to be – the Premier League.”Evans’s wealth and ambition are likely to mean that Keane will have significant funds with which to orchestrate a push for promotion next season.”The appointment of Roy Keane further demonstrates our commitment to help Ipswich Town Football Club achieve our aim of returning to the Premier League at the earliest possible opportunity,” added Clegg. “Roy has experienced promotion as Championship winners as a manager and, importantly then kept his side in English football’s top flight and I am looking forward to working with him.”The Suffolk club have confirmed Keane will be unveiled at a press conference at Portman Road at 4pm today.”
