Hillsborough disaster victims

“It began as a whisper, grew into a chant and ended as a vast bellow of outrage as the grief of the 30,000 packed into Anfield exploded in raw anger yesterday.Around the famous stadium, where they had gathered to pay tribute on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy, the words reverberated again and again: “Justice for the 96.Those inside Anfield, along with thousands more across Merseyside, had impeccably observed the two minute silence. And they stood with heads bowed, many weeping, as church bells then sounded across the city – one toll for each Liverpool fan who died. But when Sports Secretary Andy Burnham told the Anfield crowd he brought a message from the Prime Minister to say the victims would never be forgotten, the fury spilled over.Burnham, visibly shaken, was silenced first by boos and jeers – then by the chants of those who feel their calls for justice have been repeatedly snubbed.Gordon Brown was not in Liverpool yesterday. He was at another memorial service in Aberdeen for the 16 people killed in the North Sea helicopter crash. But he did give the families some hope that the full truth about what happened at that fateful FA Cup semi final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest may finally be revealed. It was yesterday announced the PM is calling for all official records relating to the tragedy to be released. At the inquest into the deaths, the coroner ruled all 96 had received the injuries that killed them by 3.15pm.It meant nothing that happened after that time was investigated. There was no examination of the allegedly shambolic rescue operation or the fact that ambulances were apparently stopped from reaching the dying. The decision stunned the victim’s families, who have spent 20 years trying to get the inquest reopened.Campaigners also hope a full release of all documents will show who in South Yorkshire Police was responsible for the “black propaganda” operation that blamed Liverpool fans for the tragedy.Yesterday’s memorial began with a two minute silence that started at 3.06pm – the exact time the match was abandoned in 1989. Liverpool came to a standstill as cars and buses pulled over and shoppers and office workers stood side by side.Inside Anfield, Everton fan Mr Burnham said unanswered questions still haunted the grieving families. He added: “Hillsborough created deep wounds that will never heal.“The families have faced decades of anguish and still have many unanswered questions.”

SWP: We can bounce back

“AS Shaun Wright- Phillips stood outside Eastlands contemplating the sight of young fans about to perform a bungee jump it was hard not to draw a comparison with City’s yo-yo season.
One minute scaling the heights, the next plunging to the depths before rebounding and beginning the whole giddy process over and over again.
Sunday’s 3-1 home defeat to Fulham sent the Blues hurtling towards earth but Wright-Phillips and the rest of the squad know that will quickly be forgotten and they will be back in orbit if a two-goal UEFA Cup deficit against Hamburg can be turned around in front of a full house tomorrow night.
The 27-year-old England international is sure that the season-long Istanbul dream is still alive and also believes that the crowd criticism aimed at boss Mark Hughes at the weekend was both unjust and unhelpful.
“People should see that we have come a long way in a short space of time and it is a matter of building things so they are bigger and better,” reckoned the midfielder who is battling an ankle injury to be fit to face the German side but who took time out to visit a City in the Community initiative yesterday.
“I believe that everyone has to be a bit more patient with the manager. It is tough for him at the moment, it is tough for everyone with all the changes that have gone on and are going on.”

Influence

“I believe we have come along the road a way and if everyone has the faith and has the patience they had when the club was first taken over then we will be fine.
“I am very supportive of the manager. The main reason I came back was the supporters but the manager also had a very big influence. I used to watch him as a kid and idolise him and I noted what he has done as a manager and wanted to work with him.
“I think the upset at the weekend was more about emotions than anything else. The fans want to win as much as we do and when we don’t play well they show those emotions.
“They show them from the outside while we show them within the club but I understand what they are going through. Of course they have a right to express their opinions just like everyone else but it is better if they are behind us.
“I don’t think there was negativity for the sake of it but it is more an issue of belief. They know the capabilities we have as a team and want us to show our best. We let ourselves, and them, down on occasions.”
Hughes pointed to tired minds contributing to the mistakes that led to the end of an impressive home run at the weekend and Wright-Phillips agreed.
“Fatigue is an issue and only people who have played in the game can really understand what it is like travelling, training, playing every three days,” he declared. “It is the intensity that is huge and the recovery time really short any teams will tell you that there is a fatigue factor.
“Of course it is part of our job and we are well looked after but it can get on top of you when the games come thick and fast.
“There is a core of players who have played the majority of the season, some of them carrying injuries and at this part of the season it can take its toll. You just have to get on with it though. There is no point in moaning. The more games you play in a season as a club then the more successful you are being. There has to be a mind over matter thing going on. You have to be positive.”

Positive

That positivity shines through everything that former Academy graduate Wright-Phillips does and that is why he believes that City will find themselves in the last four of the UEFA Cup on Friday morning.
“We are very good at home normally and if we go out tomorrow and play as well as we can do then anything is possible,” he asserted.
“We usually make enough chances, especially at home, to win any match by two goals it is just a matter of taking those chances. Everyone is confident. We had a meeting on Tuesday that was upbeat and we have the belief that we need.”
He insists that comments made by team-mate Stevie Ireland in the moments after the defeat at the Nordbank Arena that some players went missing in the first leg, have not made a dent in moral.
“Stevie was obviously upset about the result in Hamburg as we all were and maybe the emotion in the immediate aftermath took over, I don’t know, but there are no hard feelings between anyone in our dressing room and we all get on fine and want the same thing which is success for City,” insisted Wright-Phillips who was delighted that Ireland had been nominated in the top six for the PFA’s Young Player of the Year award. “He is an outstanding talent and has done really well this season,” reckoned Wright-Phillips.
“He has shown everyone what we have always known in terms of his ability. He is a remarkable player in my eyes.”
Months of being battered by defenders and midfielders wary of his potent pace and goal threat finally caught up with the Blues favourite son, Wright-Phillips, in Germany when he limped off the pitch, into the treatment room and out of the Fulham debacle.
His bruised ankles that have been tapped incessantly from day one finally cried enough but he is hopeful of being back on the pitch tomorrow.
“I hope to be back, I have been having treatment this week but it will be a last minute decision,” he confirmed.
Wright-Phillips was talking at an event to that gave young Mancunians the chance to try snowboarding, rock climbing, abseiling, football skills, cycling, and bungee jumping at a free adventure day at the stadium.
The free activities were part of the official launch of the Play and Adventure project organised by the club’s registered charity, City in the Community.” (“Manchester Evening News”)
