Tim Cahill and Gareth Barry
Cahill and Barry both found the net

Aston Villa battled back from 3-1 down to secure a point against Everton.

“Marouane Fellaini gave Everton the lead when he slotted in Leighton Baines’ cross before Tim Cahill headed in Steven Pienaar’s corner.John Carew slammed in to reduce the arrears, but Pienaar restored the two-goal advantage with a great 20-yarder.James Milner smashed in a 25-yard free-kick before Gareth Barry completed the comeback from the spot after Joleon Lescott had fouled Stiliyan Petrov. The 40,188 crowd were treated to a terrific thriller at Villa, although the first effort on goal did not arrive until the 17th minute when Phil Neville hit a cracking half-volley that Brad Friedel had to tip behind.

Two minutes later Everton were ahead when Baines picked out the distinctive mop-haired figure of Fellaini with a low ball from the left leaving the Belgian with a tap-in at the far post.Villa, who going into the game had picked up just one point from 18, were under severe pressure as David Moyes’ men, now with a taste for goals, piled forward looking for a second. That arrived via the head of Cahill, who freed himself from the jostling in the area to nod in, at the second attempt, Pienaar’s left-wing corner.

Villa came to life at 2-0 down and both Ashley Young and Milner began to use their pace to make space on their respective wings in order to deliver crosses for the goal-hungry Carew, who looked desperate to add to his eight goals in the league. He managed to do just that shortly before half-time when Milner’s delivery from the right found Barry who fed the ball into the six-yard for Carew to slam in.The match had already been graced with a great deal of excitement, but there were more treats in store after the break.Against the run of play early in the second half, Everton added a third when Pienaar collected Neville’s pass, turned, then curled a magnificent effort from 20 yards. There was better to follow. Less than two minutes later, Villa were awarded a free-kick after Cahill pulled back Barry. The former Newcastle midfielder Milner placed the ball about 25 yards out before rocketing an unstoppable shot past Tim Howard. With their tails up yet again, Villa pressed forward looking for an equaliser and it came from the spot courtesy of reliable penalty-taker Barry.Having had two penalty appeals turned down earlier, Villa finally got their wish when Howard Webb judged Lescott’s high kick to have impeded Petrov.Barry smashed in his fifth penalty from five attempts this season.Villa looked more likely to grab a winner in a manic final 15 minutes with Young going close with a low shot, Carew’s header missing by inches and substitute Nathan Delfouneso forcing a save from Howard, but it somehow remained 3-3.”

Dickson Etuhu and John Pantsil celebrate Fulham's second goal
Dickson Etuhu and John Pantsil celebrate Fulham’s second goal

Clint Dempsey scored twice as Fulham came back from a goal down to clinch a convincing win at Manchester City.

“City, who left £32.5m Brazilian Robinho on the bench, struggled until Stephen Ireland scored with a deflected shot. But Pablo Zabaleta’s mistake led to Dempsey levelling with a low shot and Dickson Etuhu made it 2-1 when he fired into the top corner soon afterwards.Robinho was belatedly brought on but another City error, by Richard Dunne, allowed Dempsey to slot home a third. The decision to drop Robinho to the bench demonstrated how City boss Mark Hughes is running out of patience with his club’s record signing, whose form in recent weeks has been fitful at best. But if Hughes thought it would galvanise his side ahead of the second leg of their Uefa Cup quarter-final with Hamburg on Thursday, he was to be disappointed.

Not even the return of Martin Petrov after almost six months on the sidelines with a knee injury lifted the home side, who looked lethargic for most of the first half-hour, and were short of ideas after the break.City, who need to score at least twice against Hamburg to turn around their deficit from the first leg, will need a huge improvement on this display if they are to trouble the German side.It was Fulham who took the initiative in the early stages and they created the first opening when Dunne slipped as he tried to deal with a Simon Davies header. The ball dropped for Bobby Zamora but Shay Given was out quickly to block his shot. The visitors also had claims for a penalty turned down when Dunne and Andy Johnson tussled in the box, while Dempsey wasted a good opportunity when he slipped with the goal gaping and fired well wide.City, in contrast, were creating next to nothing yet still took the lead on 28 minutes.Ireland picked up the ball in his own half and burst forward before trying his luck from the edge of the area with a shot that clipped John Pantsil and looped into the net. That goal flattered City but they almost had another before half-time when Valeri Bojinov’s shot fizzed inches wide.Fulham, unsurprisingly, looked frustrated after seeing all their early good work go unrewarded but their perseverance paid off after the break. In the 50th minute, Zabaleta carelessly lost possession and, although Micah Richards did well to stop Zamora, the ball fell perfectly for Dempsey to beat Given with a powerful low shot.By now, City were looking vulnerable at the back and paid the price for failing to clear their lines from a cross when Etuhu, whose brother Kelvin was in City’s side, lashed a powerful shot past Given from the edge of the area. And things almost got worse for the home side when Brede Hangeland somehow headed over from a Davies free-kick with Given stranded. The home crowd called for Robinho’s introduction and got their wish after 63 minutes. But the closest he came to rescuing his side came when he was sent clear by fellow substitute Danny Sturridge but failed to get enough power on his shot to beat Mark Schwarzer.City, who had won their previous six home games, became increasingly desperate near the end and another mistake allowed Dempsey to make sure of the points.Dunne was caught out when he tried to intercept a through-ball on the half-way line and Zamora ran through before slipping the American clear and he fired through Given’s legs and into the net”

Should the Champions League final be moved from Rome?

“How many people have to be stabbed in Rome before Uefa agrees to move the Champions League final? Roma’s notorious supporters are stuck in the dark ages of the Seventies and Eighties, but that has not stopped Uefa from pressing ahead with its controversial plan to hold this year’s Champions League final in Rome’s Olympic Stadium. The time is right to make a stand.Sources at Uefa have told The Times that many working at the organisation’s headquarters in Switzerland are unhappy with the choice of venue for May’s final. When they raised their concerns with the governing body’s top brass they were told that it was Italy’s turn to host the final.Uefa is hoping that there will be no trouble on May 27 and is confident that Italian police will deal with any problems. Any English supporter who has been to the Olympic Stadium knows that holding the final there is a risk not worth taking. Type “Roma” and “stabbing” into Google and you get 280,000 results.Arsenal supporters were attacked when their team beat Roma on penalties last week, 14 Liverpool fans were stabbed when their side played in the Italian capital eight years ago, 16 Manchester United followers were stabbed in 2007, three Middlesbrough fans were knifed in 2006. The list goes on.“It’s fair to say a few eyebrows have been raised about the decision to play the game at the Olympic Stadium,” a source at Greater Manchester Police said. “Given the number of times Roma supporters have found themselves embroiled in trouble in recent years, doubts have been expressed about whether an English club would have been awarded the final if they’d the kind of record Roma have on that front.”According to Uefa, the governing body’s core mission is to promote the principles of unity and solidarity in football. It is difficult to see how that can be achieved when English, Spanish, German and Portuguese supporters are worried that they will be stabbed if their team qualifies for the final.“We are very concerned,” Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters’ Federation, said. “There is a history of English fans suffering serious attacks in Rome and a failure by the Italian authorities to deal with it.”Violent incidents at Serie A games may be declining, but Italian football needs a short, sharp shock to eradicate its hooligan problem. English clubs were banned from European competition for five years after the tragic events at Heysel in 1985, but Uefa’s policy for dealing with what is rapidly becoming the Italian disease is a slap on the wrist and a paltry fine.Michel Platini, the Uefa president, warned earlier this season that the final would be moved if there were any more violent incidents in Rome and we are challenging him to back his words with action. The Champions League final is scheduled to be played on Wednesday May 27 and Wembley Stadium, the Nou Camp in Barcelona and the AllianzArena in Munich are some of the venues available to host European club football’s biggest game.Say no to Rome. Say no to Stab City. Say non to Michel Platini. Join our campaign to force Uefa to move the Champions League final by e-mailing rome@timesonline.co.uk and we will forward your comments to Platini. Rome derby marred by Ultras as British tourist has buttocks slashed

By Nick Pisa

( “Daily Mail” )

“A British tourist attending Saturday’s Lazio-Roma derby was slashed across the buttocks in the classic Ultras calling card.Allan Brown, 31, was visiting the city for the Easter break and took advantage of the game being on to visit the Olympic Stadium – venue for next month’s Champions League final.Mr Brown suffered wounds to the buttocks after being slashed by around ten knife wielding Roma fans and was rescued by a passing Italian TV personality.Buttocks slashing ia a trademark of Roma’s notorious Ultras and the wound is not lethal but extremly painful and embarassing. It was the latest in a series of incidents that have marred matches involving Roma’s hardcore Ultra fans and will again raise questions about the suitability and safety of the venue.Four British teams are left in the Champions League – which resumes next week – and this season Arsenal fans who attended last month’s quarter final against Roma were also targeted. In 2007 Manchester United fans during a Champions League quarter final were also attacked and the previous year Middlesbrough fans were set upon in the city centre.UEFA have already said they are happy with security at the Olympic Stadium and are not willing to move the showpiece final which takes place on 27 May.Police said Mr Brown was attacked as he drank a beer in the Ponte Milvio area, a few minutes walk from the stadium, at the end of the match but it is not known if he was on his own.

The group ran off after Italian TV star Paolo Calabresi, who presents a satirical show called Le Iene (The Hyenas) ran towards the group with his camera crew and shouted at them.Signore Calabresi said: ‘It all happened very quickly. I think he was on his own but I’m not sure. I saw that he was being attacked and kicked by a group of ten people.’We ran at them and they ran off – two of them I saw get into a car. We picked him up off the floor and he said he was English and I saw that he was losing a lot of blood. ‘It was really frightening. Then an ambulance crew arrived and took him to hospital. I hope he is OK.’

A spokesman at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome where Mr Brown was taken said: ‘Mr Brown had wounds to his buttocks and had lost a lot of blood but his condition is not life threatening. Privacy laws forbid me from saying anything else.’A Rome police spokesman said they could not rule out the possibility Mr Brown was targeted because he was English. He added that police made five arrests during the bad tempered match which ended in a 4-2 win for Lazio. Before the game police also seized a variety of weapons including knives, axes and smoke flares hidden by a bridge close to the Olympic Stadium.”
