Football thugs jailed over match-day battle
Leicester Mercury

“A group of 11 thugs who terrified shoppers in a match-day battle in the city centre have been jailed.Paving slabs and other missiles rained down around shoppers as groups of Norwich City and Leicester fans clashed in Loseby Lane, part of The Lanes shopping area. The violence, on February 16 last year, which went on for more than three minutes, spread to High Street before police arrived. At Leicester Crown Court on Wednesday, the ringleaders were jailed for a total of five years and three months after Judge Michael Pert said it was “pure chance no one was hurt”.Police urged football fans to tell officers if they spotted the men at any future games. The court watched CCTV footage showing the brawling group of about 30 men hurling stones and shouting. One slab was seen falling near the feet of a girl. The thugs used masonry and barriers in the street during repaving work as weapons.Philip Gibbs, prosecuting, said the Norwich fans had left the match – which Leicester City won 4-0 – before the end. They wandered into town with no police escort, where they met Leicester fans.He said: “It’s abundantly clear that members of the public were caught up and were forced to flee and take refuge.”They were at risk of being struck by missiles.
“There was panic, there was fear and considerable distress.”
The two Leicester men charged were Graham Anstiss (45), of Wycombe Road, New Humberstone, and his son Damian (23), of Ditchling Avenue, Dane Hills.
Paul Prior, defending Graham Anstiss, said his client was a former member of the Baby Squad, which committed acts of football violence in the 1980s.
He said Anstiss had changed since then.
Father and son were both jailed for seven months after they admitted affray.
Six men from Norwich – James Asbery (24), Nigel Broom (37), Andrew Collison (40), Gary Cox (45), Leon Horton (43) and Ben Potter (35) – were each sentenced to seven months for affray.
Michael Davies (38), Mark Gilby (43) and Mark Hipperson (38), also from Norfolk, were given three months after pleading guilty to using threatening behaviour.
Other Norwich fans who admitted affray – Paul Cossey (20), Adam Ford (20) and Thomas Stanler (19) – were given suspended jail sentences of seven months and ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.
All were banned from football matches for the next six years.
Judge Pert said: “I have to send a message and this kind of violence has nothing to do with football. It’s gratuitous thuggery.”
Speaking after the case, Inspector Rob Widdowson said: “I hope this sends a very strong message that behaviour like this will not be tolerated in Leicester.
“Do not think you can use a football fixture as an excuse to commit public disorder because we will use all the powers available to us to identify you and take action against you.
“All these men have been banned from attending any football match for six years.
“We therefore would like genuine Leicester fans to help us police that ban.
“If you spot these men at a match, call police on 0116 222 2222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
