Our boys ‘stolen’ by United, say Lazio

Tuesday, 7 April 2009 ( Belfast Telegraph)

Following Manchester United’s victory over Aston Villa, thanks to new star Frederico Macheda, Lazio have blasted the club over their capture of the Italian teenager.Lazio detailed the “cattle market” they encountered when United arrived in Rome, determined to sign a 15-year-old Macheda.United approached Macheda six months before he was 16 — the age at which Lazio, under Italian regulations, are able to offer him a contract, and their offer of a three-year contract worth over £200,000 by the age of 17 proved irresistible. The lengths to which Lazio went to keep “Kiko”, as his new team-mates know him, underline his potential. Walter Sabatini, the former Lazio sporting director, wrote twice to Ferguson pleading with him not to take such a young player.“Ferguson wrote back to say: ‘The rules permit me to do it and I will do it’,” Sabatini claimed yesterday. Lazio even gave the young striker a first-team squad number when the roster for the new Serie A season went up in July 2007 and offered him a contract on his 16th birthday — all to no avail. Macheda signed for United, on the same day.Study the life story of Macheda, initially raised in an impoverished family setting at Reggio, in Calabria, and it is easy to understand why United, with their typical offer of re-housing the family and providing work for the striker’s father, Pascuale, were difficult to resist. As a toddler Federico always wanted to catch a ball, rather than kick it, Pascuale revealed yesterday, but after the family moved to Rome he settled him into two local football clubs — physical education being scant in the Italian education system — and everything was sacrificed for his talent.Lazio’s bitter complaints echo those of Parma who, after losing Giuseppe Rossi to United and Arturo Lupoli to Arsenal in the summer of 2004, had to go to Uefa arbitration just to get transfer fees.Italian clubs’ general disinclination to offer contracts until boys are 18 or 19 has made this a recurrent theme in the country, from where an estimated 20 stars have been lost in the same way in recent years. The outcry after Macheda’s departure prompted Lazio to offer four youngsters immediate pro contracts but the exodus goes on, though, with Davide Petrucci — described as “the new Francesco Totti” — following Macheda to United from Roma last July.

Our boys ‘stolen’ by United, say Lazio

Tuesday, 7 April 2009 ( Daily Mail)

“Italian giants Lazio last night launched an astonishing attack on Manchester United over the manner in which they allegedly enticed new teenage hero Federico Macheda to Old Trafford.Macheda, 17, will be rewarded for his winning debut goal against Aston Villa on Sunday with a place on the substitutes’ bench against Porto in tonight’s Champions League quarter-final, first leg.

Federico Macheda

Lazio president Claudio Lotito said: ‘All these players are robbed (stolen) as a matter of course by this club. They are always outside what is normal in terms of etiquette.New home: Italian Federico Macheda trains with United yesterdayBut the club who reared Macheda accused United of throwing money at his family in order to bring him to England shortly after his 16th birthday in August 2007.’They go to the parents and give them money and important jobs. These are boys who come from poor families. The families base their choices on economic interests.’It’s not moral. It is like a cattle market. The young players are treated like cattle.’Italian laws do not allow youngsters to commit to contracts until their 16th birthday, a situation that United exploited by agreeing the move beforehand. Last night, United, who have not broken any law, did not comment.”
