Danny Higginbotham’s fierce free-kick sank West Ham and sent Stoke into their first FA Cup semi-final for 39 years as they edged a fast and furious clash that was full of controversy.

After Robert Huth headed the Potters in front, referee Mike Jones angered both sides with his decisions, first to allow Frederic Piquionne’s equaliser to stand despite an apparent handball and then to award Stoke a cheap penalty which Robert Green saved brilliantly.Jones also played a key part in Higginbotham’s winner, awarding the Potters another free-kick for handball in the wall when Jermaine Pennant’s initial effort was blocked.

Wenger will focus on the league while Ferguson can still win the Treble

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger attempted to find the positives after watching his side crash out of a third competition in the space of two weeks.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson does not expect Rio Ferdinand to be fit for England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales on 26 March.

The 32-year-old defender is sidelined with a calf injury picked up ahead of United’s loss at Wolves on 5 February.”Rio has been doing a bit of running. He will be ready for the game after the internationals,” said Ferguson.”I wouldn’t have thought he would have a chance before that. I don’t think it would be wise for him to be called up.”England skipper Ferdinand’s expected absence for the game against Wales at the Millennium Stadium is set to reopen the debate of who should take over the captaincy.Vice-captain Steve Gerrard is already out of the game after undergoing groin surgery which is set to rule the Liverpool midfielder out for a month.

Tim Clancy’s own goal gave Rangers a late victory over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League.

El-Hadji Diouf struck his first league goal for Rangers to give the home side a half-time advantage.Jamie Hamill’s penalty, awarded after Richard Foster’s foul on Tim Clancy, drew Killie level on 61 minutes.But Clancy diverted Vladimir Weiss’s cross into the net in the 87th minute and the hosts survived a late onslaught to claim all three points.The Ibrox side are now two points behind leaders Celtic, who have played a game more, while fourth-place Kilmarnock hold a two-point advantage over Dundee United, the Tangerines having two games in hand.
