Wales produced a repeat of their Cardiff comeback to deny Gordon Strachan a winning start to his competitive Scotland managerial career.

Scotland started poorly but led through Grant Hanley’s first-half header.

Wales’ Gareth Bale had to be taken off, but Aaron Ramsey equalised from the spot as Robert Snodgrass was sent off.

And with the Scots reeling, Hal Robson-Kanu rose unchallenged to head home the winning goal for Wales, who had Ramsey sent off in injury time.

The victory lifts Wales up to third place in Group A but the Scots find themselves adrift at the bottom with no wins and just two points from five games.

The match ended in a similar fashion to Wales’ 2-1 win in Cardiff back in October, as Chris Coleman’s side came from behind to strike two late goals after Scotland needlessly conceded a penalty.

Wales 2-1 Scotland October 2012

  • 27 mins: James Morrison gives Scotland the lead.
  • Steven Fletcher doubles Scotland’s advantage but it’s incorrectly disallowed.
  • 81 mins: Gareth Bale equalises from the spot for Wales after Shaun Maloney’s foul.
  • 89 mins: Bale scores a wonder-goal to secure all three points.

Their comeback on this occasion was all the more impressive given Bale’s withdrawal at half-time.

Coleman’s side played the better football for large swathes of the game, but Strachan will be bitterly disappointed that having clawed their way into a winning position, it was surrendered.

Wales certainly came out the blocks quicker and almost caught the Scots flat-footed as they threatened to take the lead inside a minute.

Ponderous defending allowed Ramsey the opportunity to power in a drive, which Hanley did superbly to block and a soft-looking free kick given against Craig Bellamy, with Allan McGregor grounded, brought an immediate end to the danger.

But there was a less welcome respite for the Scots moments later, as Steven Fletcher crumbled in agony following an innocuous aerial challenge with Ben Davies and had to be replaced by Kenny Miller.

Hanley epitomised the nervousness seemingly coursing through the Scotland side as he misjudged a ball back to McGregor and only just managed to atone by heading clear.

Almost quarter of the game had passed before Scotland fashioned a chance. Chris Burke’s deep cross found Miller, but the striker’s header flew over.

Burke, who had excelled in Strachan’s first game in charge against Estonia, twice blew chances to pick out well-placed team-mates in front of goal, with too many Scots passes finding Welsh feet.

Bellamy and Bale were denied in quick succession by the bravery and quick reactions of McGregor, but Scotland were gradually finding their way into the game.

And though Boaz Myhill was untested by two more Miller headers, he was motionless as the Scots took the lead in first-half injury time.

Mulgrew curled a corner from the right to the back post and Hanley, brilliantly freeing himself from the shackles of Sam Ricketts, headed into the net from just a few yards.

Scotland emerged after the break a far brighter side than the one that had started the game, no doubt buoyed by the goal and the non-appearance of Bale for the second period.

Their initiative was almost rewarded by a beautifully struck Snodgrass effort, which thudded back off Myhill’s post.

But this Wales side is not one to feel sorry for itself and though penalty claims for a handball by Hanley were hopeful, they were denied an equaliser when the referee Antony Gautier deemed McGregor had been fouled before substitute Andy King – on the park seconds before – swept into the net.

Strachan says Scots caught napping

The game was turned on its head in a three-minute spell, starting with a foul by Snodgrass on Chris Gunter that brought him a second yellow card and – after a delay – a correctly-awarded penalty to Wales.

Ramsey hammered it in off the crossbar and with the Scots dazed, they were punished again as King floated in a cross from the right for Robson-Kanu to head emphatically past McGregor.

Scotland failed to threaten an equaliser, though James McArthur was cynically hauled down by Ramsey in the dying seconds, leading to the Welshman seeing a straight red.

Sadly for Scotland, Shaun Maloney blasted the free kick from 22 yards well over and Wales were left to take the acclaim of their fans.

England’s fans in San Marino sing anti-Rio Ferdinand songs

Rio Ferdinand was subjected to sustained abuse from the travelling England fans last night as they sent a clear message that they do not want the Manchester United defender to return to the national team.

Loud chants of “Rio Ferdinand, you know what you are” and “Rio — what’s the score?” were interspersed with a stream of four-letter words in vocal protest at the decision of Ferdinand to withdraw from the England squad.

Ferdinand had told Roy Hodgson on Sunday that he did not wish to travel with England to San Marino and then Montenegro but still flew to Qatar to work as a television pundit on the game for Al-Jazeera. Speaking on Friday night, Ferdinand launched a renewed defence of his decision and again claimed that it was essential for him to use the international break to rest and follow his pre-planned training regime. He said Hodgson had made it clear he may pick him in the future.

“I spoke to the manager and I think it’s down to him,” Ferdinand said. “This isn’t something that I’m doing differently. This is something I’ve done in past international get-togethers when I’ve not been involved. I know what I’m doing is the right thing. He has made it clear he will consider me for other England squads.”

Ferdinand also claimed that English football needed to look at itself from top to bottom to understand why the national team had repeatedly failed in international tournaments.

“For some reason we haven’t been able to get beyond the quarter finals of major competitions,” said Ferdinand. “Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board and have a real good look at ourselves right from the bottom all the way to the top in terms of the coaching and the way we’re bringing our players through, how we’re getting ready to play and preparing for tournaments.”

Ferdinand then compared his experiences under five different England managers. “I’ve not actually played under Hodgson yet so I wouldn’t know too much,” he said. “From what I hear he’s very organised, works a lot on team shape, which you need to do, and drills the team to the way that he wants them to play. It’s different. I was talking to Phil (Neville) before about my most enjoyable time probably in an England shirt.

“It was playing under Glenn Hoddle. He let you go out there with a free spirit. Let you go out there and express yourself and if you make a mistake, don’t worry. His thinking was a bit too ahead of his time maybe. I think if you look back over the years and look at the way that the team played then, that and Terry Venables, was probably the most expansive football that we’ve played in the last 15, 20 years.”

Hodgson was well aware last night of the abuse being directed at Ferdinand by the England fans. “I’m not deaf,” he said. With Ferdinand, Michael Dawson, Gary Cahill and Aaron Lennon having already pulled out of the squad, Hodgson suffered a fresh blow last night when Theo Walcott was also ruled out of the Montenegro game with a groin injury.

San Marino v England: football fan in coma after brawl in Bologna bar

A 65-year-old Briton was in a coma on Friday night after being punched during a brawl between fans ahead of the World Cup qualifier between England and San Marino.

The man was allegedly punched in the face by a 21-year-old England fan during a confrontation outside a bar in Bologna, about 80 miles north of the tiny independent republic.

The alleged attacker, named as Matthew Mabey, 21, was arrested and detained in custody. He is expected to face charges of aggravated assault.

His victim, who has not been named, fell heavily and smashed his head on the ground. He was rushed to an emergency clinic and then taken to a hospital in Bologna.

He underwent emergency surgery and was then placed in an induced coma. He may have to undergo further operations.

The fight happened late on Thursday night, 24 hours before England were due to play San Marino.

An argument broke out between two groups of fans outside a pub called The Bounty in Bologna’s Via Delle Moline.

The 65-year-old reportedly picked up a bar stool to defend himself.

A third English fan, aged 48, was questioned over the incident but later released. The fans had all been drinking heavily, witnesses said.

“They had been drinking since midday, I’ve never seen people drink so much,” the owner of a nearby takeaway food outlet, who declined to be named, told Ansa news agency.

“When I went on my lunch break they were already drunk and when I returned at 5pm they were still drinking.”

Around 2,000 England fans were expected to attend the game.

‘We’re at the end of the road’ — Jim Leishman says Dunfermline Athletic’s future rests with Gavin Masterton

By Neil Robertson, 25 March 2013 9.24am.

The very future of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club hangs by a thread today.

The club have until 5pm this evening to pay an outstanding tax bill of £134,000 or HMRC will enforce a winding-up notice they have served on the Pars, plunging the famous Fife side into liquidation.

The only man who can now prevent that doomsday scenario from occurring is Dunfermline majority shareholder Gavin Masterton.

The onus to rescue the club once again fell on the 72-year-old’s shoulders on Saturday afternoon prior to the Pars league match against Dumbarton.

Club legend Jim Leishman, who has been heading up a steering group tasked with uniting all the warring factions and negotiating a way out of the financial minefield, announced that they had reached “the end of the road” and the ball was once again in Masterton’s court.

Leishman said the steering group had investors in place willing to pay off the tax man and help the club through to the end of the season.

However, having completed due diligence on the club’s books, there were concerns about the long-term viability of the club in its present form.

Masterton was unavailable to speak about the latest developments and when The Courier contacted former chairman John Yorkston, he would only issue a terse “No comment”.

That left Leishman to fill the void as he briefed the Press at half-time during the Dumbarton game when he once again suggested that there was another route Masterton may opt for, voluntary administration.

Leishman said: “At 12 o’clock the steering group met to catch up, we told them where we are and at this moment in time, we’re at the end of the road and we’ve handed back to Gavin.

“Gavin’s the major shareholder, he’s in charge and he’s got to make a decision now what the future of the football club is. Gavin wasn’t represented at the meeting but knows the position.

“We made tremendous moves from where we started and we had money available, people wanting to invest for the short-term viability of Dunfermline Athletic.

“We had enough money to pay the income tax bill to HMRC on Monday. But the steering group wasn’t in it for that — it was the long-term sustainability of the football club, and that’s where people were nervous.

“One or two things made people nervous and time wasn’t with us.

“It’s completely up to Gavin now, he’s got to decide. We’ve been dealing with the scenario where it was either sustainability or liquidation but the possibility of administration cropped up on Friday.

“We’re waiting to find out what route Gavin wants to go down. He might have another investor, we don’t know. He’s got to answer the tax bill and the long-term sustainability of Dunfermline Athletic.”

Leishman added: “What the steering group is saying is we’ve taken it as far as we can and we’ve handed it back to Gavin. I don’t know what Gavin is going to do.

“Monday could be it, but we’re not looking at it that way. We’re looking for Gavin to come and say this is the way I want to go, and we’ll be there and all the Dunfermline supporters will be there.

“We’re confident we’ve got a game on Wednesday. I’ve got Dunfermline versus Falkirk in my diary for Wednesday.”
