Paul Scholes celebrates the strike that takes United back to the top of the table

By Sam Lyon

Paul Scholes grabbed the winner to earn Manchester United a laboured win over strugglers Wolves and send his side back to the top of the Premier League.

The 35-year-old ran onto Nani’s pass in the box, turned past Christophe Berra, and slid home the winner on 73 minutes.Scholes’s 100th Premier League goal spared the blushes of a United side clearly missing the cutting edge of the injured Wayne Rooney.Wolves battled well but wasted several chances to put the pressure on United.Sam Vokes wasted their best chance late on, firing over from close range, and Mick McCarthy must wonder where his side would be in the table if they could match their valiant approach play with a touch of composure in front of goal.It meant another brave display from the hosts went unrewarded and they remain outside of the drop zone only on goal difference, while United will be hugely relieved to escape from Molineux with all three points. They now leapfrog Chelsea at the top of the table and sit at the Premier League summit with a two-point cushion, albeit having played a game more the Blues.

Frederic Piquionne bundles home
Piquionne’s goals lifted the mood after another difficult week for Portsmouth

By Harry Reekie

Frederic Piquionne scored twice as Portsmouth put their off-field problems to one side by beating Birmingham and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.

The hosts, who entered administration last week, finally went ahead when Piquionne bundled home after the break. The on-loan striker then raced on to a neat Jamie O’Hara pass and turned Roger Johnson before slotting home in style.Birmingham were unlucky when a header from Liam Ridgewell was disallowed late on despite the ball crossing the line.Portsmouth beat Manchester United at this stage of their run to Cup glory back in 2008 but victory at Wembley this season would surely represent a greater achievement under such dire financial circumstances.

Shock bid to buy out Rangers to be headed by former QPR director Andrew Ellis

Rangers are on the brink of securing new ownership in a multi-million pound takeover deal.Record Sport can reveal talks are at an advanced stage with a London-based party who are prepared to invest heavily. The Ibrox giants and Lloyds Banking Group have been searching for a solution to their current money woes and fresh riches are in sight. We believe RFC Holdings (Guernsey Ltd) have been in talks for six weeks regarding moving into Ibrox and the negotiations are at a delicate stage.Record Sport understands ex-QPR director Andrew Ellis is at the heart of the RFC Holdings move.Ellis is the son of former Loftus Road chairman Peter and was also interested in taking over the London outfit nine years ago but the move fell through.A highly-successful estate agent and mortgage consultant, he has been around football for many years and the game runs in the family. The new group believe the chance is there to move into Ibrox and take the club forward in a major way – but they face opposition as there is one other serious contender from Asia.Lloyds have been calling the shots at Ibrox for several months as they wait for the right offer to come along.Parties have displayed interest but the first genuine rescue package, from a four-man group that involved South African tycoon Dave King, of £18 million was thrown out.Rangers are £31m in debt and, although they announced half-year profits last month of more than £13m, the situation is still grim with Donald Muir on the board alongside chairman Alastair Johnston helping to oversee Rangers’ recovery bid.But Lloyds will see this bid from RFC Holdings as a far more viable proposition to the Kingled deal.David Murray has always insisted he wouldn’t sell unless convinced the new owner could take the club on.The fact talks with RFC Holdings are at an advanced stage suggest he is convinced the Ellis approach ticks all the right boxes.

Offer to buy Rangers is imminent

Rangers are looking for new owners

By Chick Young
BBC Scotland football reporter

A bid to buy Rangers could be lodged within days.

A consortium headed by London-based property developer Andrew Ellis, a former director at Queen’s Park Rangers, is preparing to make an offer. However, BBC Scotland has learned that two other parties are also considering bids to take over the Ibrox club.Sir David Murray, who relinquished his chairmanship and place on the board in August, controls around 90% of the shares in the Scottish champions.Rangers are £31m in debt and last month chairman Alastair Johnston warned that the “future outlook remains fraught with challenges”.The club has been under pressure from Lloyds Banking Group to bring their costs under control and have not signed any players since August 2008.

And a club statement read: “The board of directors of the Rangers Football Club plc is aware of the recen takeover speculation in the media and refers shareholders and supporters to a previous statement issued in October 2009.

“The club’s board has been advised by its principal shareholder, Murray International Holdings Limited, that it is considering options regarding its shareholding in the club and this may or may not lead to MIH disposing of some or all of its stake in the club to a third party.”The directors of the club will keep shareholders advised of key developments but the board is unable to comment further at this time.”The squad was trimmed last summer, while Portuguese midfielder Pedro Mendes was sold in January.Manager Walter Smith and his assistant Ally McCoist have been working without contracts since their agreements expired at the turn of the year.Rangers enjoy a 10 point lead in the championship race, with a game in hand over closest challengers Celtic, while they are in the final of the Co-operative Insurance Cup and the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

MANIFESTAZIONE “ENGLISH DEFENCE LEAGUE” IN APPOGGIO A G. WILDERS

Around 250 members of the English Defence League gathered outside the Tate Britain to march to the Houses of Parliament in support of the Dutch MP Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom, who is visiting the UK. London, United Kingdom. The group were held longer than expected outside the Tate as anti EDL protesters sat in the road and blocked it off by the Houses of Parliament. After speaking to Abbie Maxwell Jones, the sister of the organiser, she explained the beliefs the group hold, including being against racism, against the British National Party and accepting towards a wide spectrum of people within society. She wanted to solidify the fact that the EDL were there to have a peaceful protest in support of Geert Wilders who is visiting the UK to screen his new anti Islam film, Fitna. Previously Mr. Wilders was denied entry into the UK, but this ban has been overturned. Since receiveing death threats for his ‘Islamaphobia’ he has had 24 hour security for the past five years 05/03/2010..Eugeine Jones, from Wales, explained to me how a mosque was being built in his community and that he did not agree with this, along with the fact that Muslims run all the convenience shops in the area. He felt safe in the group of protesters but vulnerable in everyday life, with the fear of not being able to express his views without retaliation from his local Muslim community. One of the speakers outside the Tate Museum ended his speech with, “God bless the Muslims, they’ll need it in fucking hell.” Perhaps he left out the extremist part, but still for a group who claim they are not racist this is a disturbing remark which gained a huge uproar of cheers. The march eventually proceeded along Milbank and Abingdon Street to the Houses of Parliament once the anti-EDL demonstrators were cordoned off by police and vans. The demonstrators then gathered outside the Houses of Parliament for at least an hour, shouting at the anti-EDL demonstrators who were across the street. In the end the police guided the EDL members to exit 5 of the underground station at Westminster and there was no trouble.
