WALKING out on to the Ibrox pitch on Sunday will be a sombre moment.

John Greig and I will lead out the teams before the Old Firm derby. We’ll also lead the commemoration of the 66 lives lost in The Ibrox Disaster.January 2, 1971, is a day forever engrained in the history of Rangers AND Celtic.A day of tears of tragedy and, for me, a day which drew both sets of fans closer together.Of course, the rivalry will never diminish. But, for a few moments before kick off, EVERYONE must unite in honouring those who died 40 years ago.Yes, it was Gers fans who perished on Stairway 13 in the last moments of a 1-1 draw. But the point has never been lost on me that it could just as easily have been Celts supporters who died.Such horrific tragedies have no regard for the colour of the scarf.Celts played such a significant role in helping Gers cope.Jock Stein, Sean Fallon and all the backroom staff stayed behind to assist the emergency services.Dr Fitzsimmons, our club medic, tended to the injured.Myself and the other players attended many of the funerals and other church services. We were close to the Gers players. We knew many of them from Scotland squads and had played against them for years.Celts fans were also affected by what they’d seen. They left tributes at Ibrox, they did what they could to help.It never ceases to amaze me how people can be drawn together in such times of awful adversity and loss.I remember Walter Smith acting as a pallbearer when Tommy Burns passed away. It shows that those who support rival teams can still offer support to each other at really tough times.I know I’ll be emotional when I walk out ahead of Scott Brown on Sunday lunchtime. But I also know it is right that we should all mark the passing of those who died.So many of those who passed away were young men, teenagers, boys.I can still remember Jimmy Steel coming back to Celtic Park that night and describing the horrors he’d seen.I hardly knew a person who didn’t share the pain of those families who lost a loved one.One grain of comfort was the positive reaction from fans across the Old Firm divide. It is something that was so encouraging to witness. It raised the spirits of everyone during the darkest of times.I’d love to see that same positive attitude and mutual respect this weekend at Ibrox. And Gers are to be commended for marking the 40th anniversary with such wonderful tributes this weekend. We were all united in our grief back then. Now, four decades on, we are again ready to remember those who died together. It will be a strange feeling to lead out Celtic again after all these years and I’m sure Greigy will be thinking the same thoughts about walking out ahead of David Weir. But it is a huge honour for us both and we are humbled by the gesture. This MUST be a fitting tribute to those who didn’t return home.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon defends Scott Brown after red card rules him out of Old Firm game

NEIL LENNON last night leapt to the defence of Scott Brown after the Celtic skipper ruled himself out of Sunday’s Old Firm showdown with a crazy 89th-minute red card in the 1-0 win over Motherwell. The Hoops boss only just managed to keep a lid on his fury at the display of referee Stephen Finnie that ended with Brown picking up a needless second booking for a crunching lunge on Steven Hammell late on.
