Luci ed ombre per le formazioni inglesi e scozzesi nei preliminari di Europa League. L’ Aston Villa ha ottenuto un buon pareggio esterno sul campo del Rapid Vienna mentre Man City e Liverpool hanno superato di misura Timisoara e Trabzonsport. Quanto alle scozzesi i Celtic hanno piegato l’ Utrecht mentre il Motherwell ha subito una sconfitta rimediabile (2-1) sul terreno dell’ Odense. Appare compromessa la situazione del Dundee che ha ceduto in casa, seppure con un solo goal di scarto, all’ AEK Atene.

A weakened Villa side got off to the perfect start in Austria when lively winger Marc Albrighton crossed for Barry Bannan to tap in from four yards.But Rapid quickly improved and they levelled when the superb Steffen Hofman centred for Atdhe Nuhiu to glance in.Brad Guzan made three superb saves as Villa held on for an important draw.That makes the English side favourites to reach the group stage when they entertain Peter Pacult’s side at Villa Park next Thursday.

Balotelli struck minutes after coming on for his debut in Romania

Manchester City’s £24m striker Mario Balotelli came off the bench to score on his debut as they won their Europa League play-off first leg in Timisoara.

Balotelli came on with City struggling against the little-known Romanians and with 18 minutes left he coolly fired in after good work from Emmanuel Adebayor.Timisoara had started well and had two penalty appeals turned down as City laboured for long periods.But soon after Yaya Toure hit the post, Balotelli grabbed the decisive goal.The 20-year-old’s dream start to his City career makes his new club very strong favourites going into the second leg at Eastlands next Thursday.

Liverpool’s Joe Cole missed a penalty as his side had to make do with a slender first-leg lead over Trabzonspor in their Europa League qualifier.

The Reds went ahead when Cole set up Ryan Babel to finish with aplomb.The home side then dominated but after winning a penalty for a foul on Lucas Leiva, Cole saw his tame effort saved.Reds keeper Pepe Reina impressively saved from Umut Bulut before Christian Poulsen was denied a goal for a dubious foul on keeper Onur Kivrak.Liverpool’s failure to capitalise on their second-half chances will leave boss Roy Hodgson in rueful mood going into the return leg in Turkey next Thursday.

Celtic boosted their chances of reaching the group stages of the Europa League with a home win against Utrecht.

Mexico midfielder Efrain Juarez gave the hosts a 19th-minute lead with a powerful strike after good work by Georgios Samaras.The Greece international doubled Celtic’s tally in the 34th minute with a fine strike of his own from distance.Lukasz Zaluska tipped over a notable second-half effort from Utrecht’s Edouard Duplan, but Celtic held firm.

Scorer Djebbour celebrates with Lymperopoulos Nikolaos

Dundee United face an uphill task to stay in the Europa League after a play-off first-leg home defeat at the hands of AEK Athens.

The Greek side took an 11th-minute lead when Rafik Djebbour converted Ignacio Scocco’s teasing cross.And AEK could have added to their lead with Pereira Leonardo twice going close after the break.United’s best chance fell to Jon Daly but the striker could not hit the target after finding space in the box.

Tom Hateley’s last-gasp strike boosted Motherwell’s chances of reaching the Europa League group stages, despite a rather harsh defeat to Odense BK.

Chris Sorensen’s free kick evaded everyone to give the Danes the lead.Motherwell still looked comfortable but were undone with 12 minutes to go by the pace of Peter Utaka, who broke away to score a terrific solo goal.Steve Jennings was sent off for the visitors but Hateley’s free-kick registered a crucial away goal.Having eliminated Breidablik and Aalesund in the previous rounds, Motherwell were aiming to extend their four-match unbeaten run in the tournament.
