Hull City AFC change name to Hull City Tigers

Hull City AFC will be renamed Hull City Tigers, says club owner Assem Allam.

The “Association Football Club” part of the Yorkshire club’s name, which has been in effect since their formation in 1904, will be scrapped.

Any references to AFC on club branding will be phased out, but will remain on the shirt crest during their first season back in the Premier League.

Allam wants to market the club as Hull City Tigers locally and Hull Tigers to national and international audiences.

He told the Hull Daily Mail:  “In the commercial world, the shorter the name, the better. The more it can spread quickly.

Hull history

Formed in 1904, they first wore black and amber shirts for their maiden Football League campaign the following year. They moved to present ground, shared with Hull FC rugby league club, in 2002, after 56 years at Boothferry Park.

“My dislike for the word ‘City’ is because it is common. I want the club to be special.

“It is about identity. ‘City’ is a lousy identity. Hull City Association Football Club is so long.”

Egypt-born Allam, who moved to Hull in 1968 to study and has since set up a multi-million pound company in nearby Melton, took charge of the club in December 2010.

“I have always used short names in business. It gives you power in the science in marketing. The shorter, the more powerful the message. In Tigers, we have a really strong brand.”

Allam’s son and vice-chairman, Ehab Allam defended the decision to drop AFC from the club’s name after 109 years.

“AFC is redundant, it is not used by the club. The fans never mention AFC, nor do the media,” he said.

Bernard Noble of the Hull City Official Supporters’ Club admitted he had mixed feelings about the decision.

“My personal opinion is I’m disappointed because I’m a bit of a traditionalist,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.

“But this guy saved us from liquidation and administration and it’s his club. I will still say ‘I’m going to watch City’, ‘I’m going to watch the Tigers’, ‘I’m going to watch Hull’. I will still say that and so will many other people.

“As far as Hull City Tigers is concerned, the fans – the 25,000 people who will be there for the first home game against Norwich – they’ll say ‘I’m off down to watch City’.

Managing director Nick Thompson, meanwhile, urged supporters “to judge it in the fullness of time”.

Charles Green: Rangers board to reconsider his position

Rangers supporters’ groups have called for Charles Green to be stripped of his consultancy role at the club.

More than 200 influential Gers fans met Ibrox chief executive Craig Mather and directors on Thursday.

They say Mather told them he would convene a board meeting within seven days, at which former chief executive Green’s position will be considered.

Club funds have shrunk to £10m despite a stock market flotation and more than 30,000 season-ticket sales.

In December, the initial public offering (IPO) fundraising on the Stock Exchange brought £22m into Rangers.

Green quit as chief executive in April before being cleared by an internal investigation over claims of close links with former owner Craig Whyte during last year’s takeover.

Charles Green returned to Rangers in a consultancy role

Charles Green returned to Rangers in a consultancy role

He returned to the club as a consultant last week, sparking a chain of events resulting in a public spat with manager Ally McCoist and chairman Walter Smith resigning on Monday.

A joint statement from the Rangers Supporters’ Association, Rangers Supporters’ Assembly and Rangers Supporters’ Trust said: “We are extremely concerned to learn that there is only £10m left in club funds after the IPO and season-ticket monies have gone into the club and will be seeking more detailed answers from the club’s board. We will seek to convene a follow-up meeting as soon as possible.

“We welcome the news that Craig Mather will convene a board meeting within seven days to consider the future of Charles Green.

“If the board reflect the mood of the room at the fans’ meeting, then Mr Green will be stripped of his consultancy role.”

On his return to Ibrox, Green said McCoist had to win a cup as well as League One this season and said former manager Smith had described last season’s side as “the worst Rangers team you have ever seen”.

The fans’ groups statement said Green’s “utterances regarding Ally McCoist and Walter Smith were horrifying”.

It added: “We are glad that Mr Mather has committed to talking to [Rangers shareholder] Jim McColl and his colleagues. The issues facing the club are very clear and urgent – with good will they can be resolved without resort to an EGM.”

Football hooligans admit Shrewsbury town centre fight

Sixteen football hooligans, including four teenagers, have admitted being part of a massive town centre brawl before a Shrewsbury Town match.

They were involved in a fight with a rival group from the West Midlands before Shrewsbury’s League One match with Walsall on October 14 last year.

And they have been warned by a judge that they could face lengthy bans from football matches for their actions.

The fighting in Shrewsbury started in Mardol before spilling into Smithfield Road in front of horrified Sunday shoppers.

Three police officers were injured as they tried to restore order, including Constable Lee Saunders who suffered a broken leg.

All 16 were banned from attending any Premier League or Football League matches until they are sentenced when they appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

They must also stay away from Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow ground as a condition of being granted bail.

Fifteen of the men admitted charges of violent disorder, while another pleaded guilty to encouraging other people to engage in violence.

Judge Robin Onions said the men could all face longer bans from football matches as part of their sentences, and granted them all conditional bail.

The men will all be sentenced in the week of September 16.

Two further men have denied charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in connection with the brawl. They will face trial on a date to be set.

The men have been brought before the court after an extensive investigation by officers at West Mercia Police, who used CCTV footage of the fight to establish the role played by everyone involved.

On the day of the match 15 people were arrested by police. Seven people were arrested in connection with the fight before the match, while a number of other incidents also took place inside and outside the ground.

In total 29 people were charged over the brawl, and the men from the West Midlands involved will appear at Shrewsbury Crown Court next week.
