Scotland boss Gordon Strachan names squad for England clash

Gordon Strachan has named a 29-man squad for next month’s friendly against England .

Celtic trio Scott Brown, Charlie Mulgrew and James Forrest return as does Vancouver Whitecaps striker Kenny Miller.

Motherwell defender Steven Hammell and Cardiff City midfielder Craig Conway retain their places.

Kenny Miller was always going to be back in the squad

Gordon Strachan Scotland manager

Strachan, on including fit-again Brown, said: “He gets better and better as he gets older.”

Brown missed the victory over Croatia with a hip injury but is available to feature at Wembley.

“He still has that energy but is controlling himself a lot better,” Strachan said of the Celtic skipper.

Strachan’s side will use the friendly at Wembley on 14 August as preparation for their World Cup qualifier, at home to Belgium in September.

Scotland’s World Cup qualification victory in Croatia in June helped them climb 24 places to 50th in the world rankings.

The Scots can no longer qualify for next year’s finals in Brazil, but the victory in Zagreb ensured they will be in pot four for the draw for Euro 2016.

Miller is in line to add to his 68 caps and Strachan is delighted to call upon the veteran striker’s services.

“Kenny was always going to be back in the squad,” said the Scotland boss.

“I spoke to him before he had this problem with his hamstring when we went away to Croatia and it was better that he rested. That seems to be a good idea.

Darren and Steven Fletcher

Strachan hopes to have Darren and Steven Fletcher available again

“So, hopefully it has benefited him and he is back for this squad.

“We look forward to having him back because he is a top professional and sets a standard at training that is great for the younger guys.”

The Scots will be without captain Darren Fletcher, as he continues his recovery from a bowel operation.

Fletcher won the last of his 61 caps for Scotland in November 2012.

Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher is sidelined with an ankle injury and Strachan hopes to have the pair back at some stage.

“Steven won’t be right for the England game but when you are talking about injuries like this, I think it is better to leave it to the clubs to tell you exactly what is going on,” said Strachan.

“I spoke to him about two weeks ago and the situation might have changed. It’s the same with Darren, I’ll leave it to the club to tell you what is going on rather than me.

“But they are top players and top blokes. They will be missed, that is for sure. The quicker they get back the better.”

Scotland squad:

Goalkeepers: Matt Gilks (Blackpool) David Marshall (Cardiff City) Allan McGregor (Hull City)

Defenders: Gordon Greer (Brighton and Hove Albion) Steven Hammell (Motherwell) Grant Hanley (Blackburn Rovers) Alan Hutton (Aston Villa) Russell Martin (Norwich City) Charlie Mulgrew (Celtic) Andy Webster (Unattached) Steven Whittaker (Norwich City)

Six football fans arrested to prevent organised brawl in Cumbria

SIX football fans have been arrested to prevent an organised brawl taking place in Cumbria.

The fight was due to take place in Carlisle city centre following Carlisle United’s preseason friendly against Championship outfit Burnley.

Five Burnley fans and one Carlisle fan were arrested as a result of police intelligence to prevent disorder breaking out in the city.

Superintendent Mark Pannone, the police match commander said “Due to positive, preventative policing tactics, disorder was prevented in Carlisle city centre.

“A fight was being arranged between opposing fans and Cumbria Constabulary acted to prevent such an incident from happening.

“These people will be interviewed and if appropriate, football banning orders will be sought to prevent these people causing problems in the forthcoming season.”

Fans let the Celts down as pitch is stormed at Brentford

CELTIC could be in hot water after supporters invaded the pitch and set off flares during yesterday’s friendly at Brentford.

Several Hoops fans had already interrupted the game by evading security to sprint on to the field of play and hundreds more spilled out of the stands at full-time to celebrate their side’s 2-1 win.

Police and stewards, who had to escort Hoops manager Neil Lennon to the tunnel at full-time, needed to step in because some Celtic supporters appeared to be trying to confront the home fans

Travelling Celtic fans shamed Scotland once again at Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Brentford.

In addition to throwing smoke bombs onto the pitch and invading it at full-time, Celtic supporters reportedly sang songs mocking the recent death of drummer Lee Rigby – to the disgust of football fans across Britain.

Coming on the back of an arson attack upon the garage which houses the Rangers team bus – which may yet prove to be motivated by sectarianism – it is a black weekend for Scottish football.

And, of course, for those who are seeking to eradicate bigotry from our game.

The disgraceful scenes at Brentford will do nothing to help Celtic’s chances of a move to English football.

Social media sites were buzzing with  people voicing their disgust at the appalling behaviour of the Celtic fans.

This is all on top of the sing-song in praise of terrorism which could be heard at the Cliftonville-Celtic game on Wednesday night.
